The Rain Wild Chronicles

I was too hard on these books when I read Dragon Keeper and Dragon Haven in 2010.

I wasn't wrong when I said they were repetitive, which I think is partly a function of the multiple points of view. Except perhaps for the many reminders in the Tawny Man trilogy that Fitz's body impregnated Kettricken, I don't remember anywhere near as much repetition in the Farseer/Liveships/Tawny Man books. I bet we're told 20 times why the dragons are stunted, which if you read Liveships you have a pretty good idea about.

Neither Thymara nor Alise has enough personality to carry the story, for my taste. Both are very caught up in the rules of their societies and find it hard to break free even with the example of people similar to them doing so - but perhaps that's the point, that it's not easy to turn your back on how you were raised to behave.

The pacing felt way too slow as the dragons were making their way upriver, and way too fast during the tumultous events in the last quarter of Blood of Dragons.

That said, though, I definitely wanted to learn how the dragons fared, it was interesting to meet a different kind of liveship, I appreciated the positive portrayal of gay relationships and it was great to revisit some of the characters from Liveships, especially Malta, Reyn and Selden.

Fool fans, while he's never mentioned by (either) name, there's a small reference in Blood of Dragons to something he/she did in Liveships.

5 months less one week to go until the release date of Fool's Assassin!
