Fandom as a Fitness Motivator

The shows for several of my fandoms always inspire me to go out and do RL physical activities.  Watching Jim running through the jungle in The Sentinel never fails to make me want to go running, Jim's arm muscles remind me to lift weights, Pros makes me want to charge around and snarl "Hah!" like Doyle does swinging that piece of pipe or whatever ( Read more... )

You can do WHAT with a horse? ascetic_hedony March 18 2005, 03:48:22 UTC
Congrats on the property settlement!

On behalf of all males, I beseech you not to add the stand on horse's back then drop straight down into the saddle maneuver.

Fight scenes in my fandoms usually have me commenting from a martial arts perspective. Kill Bill volume 1 has never failed to make me train harder.

I don't actually know how males manage to do a lot of horse-related things. Seems like the potential for damage is very high!

As I think I've said to you before, I'm sometimes glad I don't know more about martial arts and swordfighting, in case extra knowledge meant that I wouldn't be able to enjoy shows like Highlander as much. I know too much about horses to enjoy a lot of horse scenes in TV/movies (Mag 7 is not too bad, overall - but there's an excruciatingly bad scene I can barely watch where Chris is supposed to be breaking in a horse). I'd hate not to be able to watch Duncan or Methos!

I spent 5 months perfecting "vault over the rump of the pony" for no particular reason. Ascetic Hedony would have hated it.

Oddly, martial arts movies always inspire me to aim for graceful, relaxed movement, rather than fitness or hitting harder.

Ivanova inspires me to let my hair grow longer.

Being able to do it is reason enough! One of my male clients demonstrated that trick to me yesterday. I was afraid he was going to do himself an injury!

Legolas always makes me want to emulate his graceful, relaxed running.
