Didn't know whether I should say anything about this post, since now I'm incredibly embarrassed to the point of hiding under furniture. But, well, thanks. You should have seen the color my face turned. And I'm all squeeful about how much I agree with you, re: Zeke's stories and the whole idea of reading other pairings in fandoms where I really do have an OTP. It's always a bit of a risk, to try stories like that, but good stories can be so much more than their pairings or descriptions. One of my favorite authors in Highlander is Parda, who writes dozens of Cassandra stories in which Methos and Duncan might appear, or might not -- but when they do, her take on them is so perfect that those appearances are like caramel in the center of a chocolate.
I've been a huge fan of hers for years, even though she never wrote slash (although I'm holding my breath for the story she's working on now), and seldom had Duncan and Methos in the same place at the same time, and it's for all the reasons you give here.
I think when it comes to Mag 7, I'm even more aware of an author's sensitivity to all the characters, perhaps because it's so rare to find, and because the dynamic of their various personalities and how they fit together is one of the biggest draws for me. I think that's why I will read maygra's ATF stories, even though I don't normally stray to the AUs - she gets that, too.
It's the "emotional intensity" thing. You do it better than anyone. The only other person I know of who has a similar touch is Sebastian in Pros. Reading some of your paragraphs makes my heart clench in wonder - they have a shimmering, electric quality that I just wish I could describe. I’m looking at the scene in the street in Live Wire right now - yes, like that. That’s what I mean. Or the scene in the church in Gift of the Raven. Or the moment in Nocturne where Duncan realised that something had changed between them. Or the scene after Duncan gets out of Methos’ shower in Any Road. Actually, I might just have noticed how you do it - you describe *physically* how it affects Duncan emotionally to realise what he feels for Methos, and it gets the same response from me. But I’m sure there’s a lot more to it than that!
Yours was the very first fanfic I was ever moved to print out, six years after I discovered slash. I've often thought that if my house was on fire, there'd be two things I'd want to save - a horse statue I won once, and your HL fic (the fact that I could easily print it all out again notwithstanding!).
The beautiful presentation of your stories on your website, with not a typo to be seen, is an extra bonus.
And thanks again for the rec - I’ve enjoyed zekiel’s stories *immensely* and have in fact just come home with nice laser-printed copies of my favourites. I will try Parda’s fic when I get back to HL!
