Sam/Dean Futurefic Recs

sd_recs provided a nice long list of Sam/Dean futurefics this week. Some were already firm favourites of mine, but I've been thoroughly enjoying going through the ones that were new to me. I feel compelled to amplify the recs for these two:

Our Endless Numbered Days by whitereflection 6,195 words, in four sectons with Dean at 45, 50, 55 and 60.

I love the hug-from-behind in "50" and finally going home together again in "55" the most of the lovely vignettes:

They get home late, the good sort of exhausted. The best thing ever, ever, Sam decides, is stretching out in a real bed again, their real bed, and being able to spread his arms out wide. Then Dean drapes himself over Sam like a living blanket, and there's no teasing each other about cuddling; it's been weeks. Long weeks of not being able to feel the weight, the warmth, the solid reality of each other like this.

I get the pleasant impression, especially from the last one, that Dean became more openly affectionate over the years.

Come Stay by kelleigh 2,600 words, set not too long after 5x17 "99 Problems".

He takes care of the house while Sam's out doing whatever he likes. Dean doesn't ask because it's not important anymore. There are no secrets but they don't waste time over-sharing. Sam does what makes him happy, coming back with piles of books stacked in the passenger seat of the Jeep, so Dean guesses there's a library involved somewhere along the line. It's taken months, but they can finally look at each other again. For that, more freedom and less conversation is a price Dean would pay ten times over.

Well, isn't that interesting, and very different to the normal sort of happily-ever-after. It's a fitting dynamic considering where things were in canon when it was written.

I'm very keen on this totally unromantic way of initiating sex in a long-term relationship, too. Things seem comfortable and familiar between them:

Dean leans up on his elbow. "You wanna?"

Sam snorts and drops his arm to the bed, eying Dean from the comfort of his pillow. "Is that the best you can do?"

...but then we're reminded that they aren't:

In the dark, after the burn of sex calms, is when things start coming back. Years of repression and flagellation-they can't be quelled or fixed in a few months, no matter how much peace and quiet is lumped on them. Every night, looking at Sam, Dean has to choke back the words. Apologies, curses-Dean's not sure what would come out..

Also, I may need reprogramming. While reading another one of the recs, I came across "winces" used completely correctly as a verb in a perfectly normal sentence. My brain went "Hmm, typo, it's missing a 't'."

recs: fanfic, supernatural
