Day 26: The RSPCA
Website:
www.rspca.org.uk/home The work of the RSPCA includes education about proper care of pet animals/horses and some pet rehoming, campaigning for improvement of welfare standards in farming and for 'replacement, refinement and reduction' of animals in research (eg: against animal testing but in a 'fade it out as fast as reasonably possible but at least improve conditions in the short term' way rather than 'just stop now!' way). The charity also have a position to help wild animals, which they define as 'animals in their natural state that have not been domesticated' and include exotic pets and circus animals as well as indigenous wildlife. They are anti-hunting and but base their work on improving the welfare of animals to whom human activity causes suffering, with no particular focus on how rare the animal is. As part of this remit, they operate the wild animal rescue/vet services and 'I've found an animal in distress!' helpline which they are often known for. This extends to the sea, with an acknowledgment that many human impacts on the sea, including fishing, are inhumane but developing welfare standards for commercial fisheries to improve conditions there.
