All the famous people I've met have died off, with the exception of Wanda Jackson (and Bob Mould now that I think of it). I'm not a celebrity chaser, don't go out of my way to meet them, and don't often come face to face with famous people. Jack Dempsey, Joe Lewis, Ella Fitzgerald, Vassar Clements and now Tura Satana are about the only others and they are now gone.
Tura Satana, star of Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill died yesterday. If you haven't seen it she played Varla, the leader of a gang of go-go dancers who kidnap a couple, murder the boyfriend and force the girlfriend to follow them on further lawless adventures. She did all her stunts and fighting in that film. It's worth checking out. I wish I had her balls. I got to meet her at Amoeba Records in SF, and that's the only time I purposely went out of my way to meet someone famous. She wasn't aging well, but then neither am I.
Reading her obit in the NYT, I'm finding out things I didn't know. Harold Lloyd, the silent screen comedian is the one who suggested she go into acting, though since he was taking erotic pics of her at the time, I'm not sure what kind of acting he had in mind. She was married for the first time at the age of 13 in Mississippi (yep, it was legal to do that at that time). She dated Elvis (but then who didn't). Even more amazing, as a child she was sent to the Manzanar Internment camp. Now I want to go find out more about her and see if she ever spoke of that.
