New York, for my money, is the best city in the state. There are so many diverse neighborhoods that I can't name them all without using my fingers to count them. Harlem is my sanctuary. I'm a firm believer you don't pick which New York neighborhood you want to live in, it chooses you. I grew up in Washington Heights. From what my mom tells me, it's a much nicer & safer place now than it was when she was younger. I like it there, but Harlem beckoned. It was the colorful murals covering buildings from top to bottom, it was the live music, it was being able to buy shea butter on the streets, & it had the feeling of a tight-knit community. Harlem isn’t the most flashy neighborhood in the city. It has its fair share of neon signs and tourist attractions, but overall it’s fairly lowkey. All these things (& because it's fairly safer than it once was, like Washington Heights) made me want to move here & only here when I was able to move out on my own. Harlem is & always will be home.
