Hair

Hair isn't only something that sits on top of my head. It's a representation of who I am. Bold, beautiful, and authentic. We don't always feel bold and beautiful, but authentic? Yes. I didn't wear my hair natural for a long time. A looooooooonggg time. It wasn't until high school that I worked up the courage to let my hair breathe. No braids, no ( Read more... )

OMG Z, fuck the haters. I think you're beautiful with your natural hair and I don't even think it would be you without it. There should NEVER be a time or a place where someone is made to feel bad because their hair isn't what someone else thinks it should be. We should all be ourselves, and if that means sporting your natural hair? Well, you do you because it's YOU and you should always be true to yourself.

So are you in NYC this week? What do you say to meeting for lunch? Too bad my hair's short right now. If I had my full head of curls you bet your ass I'd let them be wild and free just to make my point. ❤️

Here here. I don't know what was going on in the 90s - 00s that made people feel contempt towards curly hair, but most of the girls & boys I knew did everything in their power to hide their natural hair. Kids were using clothes irons to rid themselves of curls! My dumbass tried it & fried off a chunk of hair. It worked for my friends with fine hair so I thought it'd work for me too. I would have been happier living life my way instead of their way, but it's never too late to change things around, so here I am with my big hair. 😊

I'm free to do lunch this week! Your short curls will do fine & I can't wait to see them/you!😄

Who knows. You could ask yourself that same question about what's going on in the world in general I guess, I mean when did the world just turn so nasty? Was it always this way and social media really brought it to the forefront? I can't say that I ever tried to iron my curls out, but I did get short haircuts to try to keep it tame. Until I ended up on Broadway anyway, then it became the real deal. Well I'm glad you said to hell with that shit, I really am. I love the natural you!! ❤️

Awesome, well then let's plan it for Friday then. I'll tell Lin, you pick the place this time. sound good? I can't wait to see you and give you a huge hug!!

That's a whole box of worms you're trying to open! Your question is probably hypothetical, but if it's not, read on! My theory is the world has always had its nasty people doing nasty things. The Tuskegee experiment, Unit 731, Gandhi abusing his wife..... I mean, those are the BIG assholes. If those things were going on, I bet all I got that the petty shit was widespread too. Not all of it was documented like it is now where someone can't even have a breakdown at McDonald's without the whole world finding out. Long story short, social media is bringing the nasty to the forefront. It's good in the way that it's showing us that our people need help & this will change life for the better once we realize we are the change. We can't rely on one group of people to make a difference. It takes the effort of everyone with a good head on their shoulders. This is my long winded way of saying if you see someone harassing someone else about something like hair, stand up for the person taking the heat. Take the offender to school ( ... )

Oh, I'm sure you're right. I'm not talking about the big time assholes, I'm talking about just someone like your neighbor who you think was a good guy (or woman) and meanwhile they really weren't. The difference is now you can't hide anything. If you're an asshole to the barista at Starbucks, you're going to be on 23 different people's TikTok feed. But years ago, you relied on the "Oh you wouldnt believe what I saw today" and odds are no one knew the person they were talking about. Social media is sort of a double edged sword. It's made it so you see so much - but it's also enabled people to hide behind supposed anonymity to be even bigger assholes. The world does need to take more people to task for acting that way. The question is 1) will they do it and 2) will they do it for the right reasons ( ... )

I would have thought people would try to be on their best behavior in public because they know everyone has their phone at the ready. Nobody gives a damn! They're comfortable going off on a random stranger, and they look into the camera like they know the majority is going to be on their side. People need help & unfortunately that help is out of reach for them because it's expensive or nobody is pushing them to seek help. I do believe people are stepping up to help, but like all else in life, it's going to take time for a difference to be felt.

The hair is staying for the foreseeable future! Did your hair change texture when you left your 20s? I can think of a few things I'd like to get back.😋 I love Thai! Let's go!

You would think, but it really is the opposite. I mean you would think knowing that if you act the fool will be caught for all to see that you'd chill out. Hardly. It's almost like they want the attention. I don't even know if it's people need help more than people just aren't brought up with the same values as once upon a time. Or maybe it's the same and it's just more apparent now since nothing is private.

Good! I don't know if it really changed texture, but the curls just aren't as tight as they once were. If you look at photos of me in my early 20's when it was long, it was real curls. When I let it grow out last year it was still curly but they weren't those tight spirally once as much as just big swooping waves that did whatever the hell they damned well pleased. It made me think I'll never get those curls back again and it's sort of a bummer even if I'm probably too old for that look now anyway.

Anyway yes! Thai! Let's do it! Would you be ok coming down to the theater and we'll duck out during lunch rehearsals?

It's gotta be a mixing pot of what's going on with society. Some people want the attention because 15 minutes of fame is 15 minutes of fame! Others don't know they're causing a scene & that could be for any number of reasons. I'm just glad me and my circle know when to chill.😌

Your water could have changed! When I shower in hard water my curls are tighter. Soft water makes them limp unless I use a special shampoo. Baby if you need hair care tips I'm here for ya! We can try shampoos, mousses, gels, masks, anything you're up for.

A quick lunch during rehearsals would be perfect.☺️ Say when & I'll be there!💜

You know, yu might be dead on about the water being the culprit. Back home in PA our water was much harder than it is here in NYC and there's a definite difference because of that. Now i need to know about this special shampoo because the soft water does suck when it comes to hair. I always thought it was just because my hair was used to the hard water but now to hear you say that, I'm thinking no, it's that way for everyone. Hmmm. And THIS is why I have a stylist, because i don't know these things!!

How does Wednesday sound? Do you want me to tell Lin to join us? Or shall we go just the two of us?

Here are a couple shampoos I've tried that worked well! Your miles may vary.
Shea Moisture Jamaican black castor oil shampoo
OXG charcoal shampoo (this didn't help tame frizzies, but at least they weren't lifeless!)
Bumble & Bumble Sunday shampoo
I haven't tried curl shampoos by Bumble & Bumble yet. If you give it a shot, don't forget to tell your girl how your hair turned out! Stylists are a lifesaver, but I only trust them with my makeup!

Today works for me!! Let's go the two of us. If Lin is with you already then of course he can come!

You know I'm going to give it a shot. Not at the moment since my hair is in the shorter phase and I need to keep it close to where it is now because of this upcoming show, but once that's over with I know I'll go through that let it grow out and be crazy phase again. If I can get my natural curls to bounce back with help from this? I'll be damned excited. Shhhh, I think Lin would be happy too LOL. Thank you and I will let you kn ow how it works. Ha, oh believe me I trust my stylist with everything. The hair. The clothes. I have zero fashion sense at all and I admit it. 🤣🤣

Lunch was so good, we need to make this a regular occurance. And I think that means you get to pick the place / what type of food we're having next time

Yes!!! Crazy phase!!! If you have luck with at least one of the products I'll be excited too. Your stylist will be so impressed with your rejuvenated tresses. You can tell them it was all your doing.😉😉

More lunch dates is a must. How does once a month sound? We can do more as time allows! I'll pick somewhere neither of us has been before. I have nothing in mind yet. I'll bring ideas when I have them.
