German

I was born in Germany in 1990. My parents weren't military, and they weren't on vacation when my mom suddenly went into labor. No, my dad is bona fide German and he somehow sweet talked my mom into moving from New York to Germany with him to have me! We moved from Berlin to NYC when I was young, but we vacationed back home frequently. It was a ( Read more... )

I love how well you speak German. I can speak shitastic Spanish, which allows me to keep my Puerto Rican cred but I keep trying to improve it every day with Ana. We speak to River in both languages so hopefully he will be fluent in both.

Thank you! I grew up speaking it, and that definitely helps. Did your parents stick to English? River's got it easy, being young and in that absorption stage of life. Keep practicing and your shitastic Spanish will become pretty good Spanish! It's leagues better than mine!

They were living in Puerto Rico at the time I was born, then we continued to travel around which didn't allow me to learn much Spanish until I was a teen living in Latin America. At least I can actually have a conversation with Ana's parents and extended family so that's a plus!

Do you read Spanish? I find that to be much easier than speaking it! Not that I'm good at that either, but I can grasp the main concept of a paragraph! To really get the hang of it, you should have Ana stop speaking English to you. You'll pick it up real quick!

I do. I can read and speak it, even if I have a terrible accent, Ana finds it endearing. That's great that you can actually grasp stuff! I wouldn't be able to grasp anything in German. We do speak a lot of Spanish at home so that helps! We speak to River in both languages.

You sounded like you knew what you were talking about! What I like about Spanish is that if you know what the letters sound like, you can understand how to say the words even if you don't know their meaning. Whoever created the language gets a gold star for that consideration.
