I just finished reading the transcript of The State of the Union address. I am so disturbed by so many things on so many different levels. Like how at least half of the entire speech is about US involvement in other countries. Oh, yeah, and terrorism, and the importance of the Patriot Act. Plus the redefining marriage comment, and the human life is a gift from the Creator remark. While I agree human cloning/embryo research is a touchy subject in terms of ethics I think it's going to seriously hurt our medical/scientific community if legislation gets passed as he proposed. And while I agree that encouraging math and science in schools is good, I think it's dangerously close to marginalizing and diminishing all of the other important, well-paid careers that are not math/science, but, say, communication, organization, or creativity oriented. Let's see... what else? A bipartisin committee to try to figure out the Social Security problem is probably a good plan, and I'm glad alternative energy technology will likely continue to get good funding. There were some things I did genmerally agree with. Still...
"In recent years, America has become a more hopeful nation. Violent crime rates have fallen to their lowest levels since the 1970s. Welfare cases have dropped by more than half over the past decade. Drug use among youth is down 19 percent since 2001. There are fewer abortions in America than at any point in the last three decades, and the number of children born to teenage mothers has been falling for a dozen years in a row. These gains are evidence of a quiet transformation -- a revolution of conscience, in which a rising generation is finding that a life of personal responsibility is a life of fulfillment. Government has played a role. Wise policies, such as welfare reform and drug education and support for abstinence and adoption have made a difference in the character of our country."
So. Disturbed.
I could contunue at this all night, but I have other more pressing concerns. Homework, how I love thee.
