Two thoughts from the theater

I went to see the movie North Country tonight. It's a good movie, in the same vein as Erin Brockovich but with a different fight, and a different message: When you see something terrible happening, the first thing you can do about it is stand up and tell the truth. That's it, nothing fancy, but oh so very powerful. Sometimes I need to be reminded that there are people willing to stand up for the truth, to stand up for eachother, no matter how hard it gets.

I believe that culture and its media are deeply intertwined. Not that I think that's a new idea, but it struck me again today as I was watching the movie previews. Three movies struck me in particular. One was about homosexuality, secrets, families, and culture. One was about life as a soldier and war in the middle east, with a rap music in the background. One was about a massive oil shortage, conspiracy, money, and war. What struck me is that this media probably really is a good reflection of our culture. And it made me so incredably sad.
