The Landmine Game

Jan 27, 2009 20:23

Hi there, fellow FKMT fans!

A friend told me that Kaiji played mahjong in the third series, and so, excited, I went ahead and started reading... well, my first reaction was "This isn't mahjong!" But my second reaction was "Hey, this could be fun for when I can't find three other players for a proper game", so I decided to write up the rules to the "Landmine Game." This is just what's described initially as the basic rules of the game in the first couple volumes.

THE LANDMINE GAME

* This is a two-player game.
* Knowledge of how to play normal "riichi" mahjong and scoring is required.

* Shuffle the tiles and build the ordinary four walls, 17 tiles long and 2 tiles high.
* Players take East and West position winds.
* You and your opponent open the wall in front of you so that it is visible only to yourself.
* You have three minutes from when the wall is opened to make a hand of 13 tiles, ideally in tenpai.
* Settle who plays first by dice or rock-paper-scissors or whatever. Winner discards first.
* Tiles are discarded from the tiles not used to create your hand.
* There is a maximum of 17 turns; in other words, only 17 of the remaining 21 tiles not used to build your hand will be discarded.
* Your winning hand MUST be of limit (mangan) value or greater. The hand must be mangan when ron is declared - ura-dora are a bonus.
* For the purposes of scoring, there is no dealer; all payments are equal.

? Dora indicator appears to be the fifth tile from the dealer's right-hand wall. Unsure how the dora indicator is chosen.

! Watch out for furiten situations - there is no tsumo in this game.
! Naturally, most people will declare riichi on the first turn
! It is better to be the first one to discard despite the danger. Discarding first means first chance at Ippatsu and only chance at Houtei.

I'll probably be giving it a try this weekend.

PS: Does anyone here play at Tenhou?
