This works perfectly. And oh, it breaks my heart. But I love how Lestrade presses Sherlock about it, makes him see what the evidence is clearly saying, and how Sherlock in turn goes back to Lestrade for help. I think what got to me most was Lestrade's "I've not been fighting his corner in this one" and Mycroft's recognition of this. The final line strikes just the right note.

Well done, indeed.

Thank you, it was one of those ideas that worked in my head but seemed awkward on paper. I'm glad it worked for you.

I am very taken with this. It makes so much sense and in addition shows something of the emotions that Lestrade, Sherlock and Mycroft are experiencing.

Thank you, I wanted to make it spare, to leave the readers to imagine the emotions involved, without downplaying the gravity of it. It is a tricky balance.

This is very good! It's spare but clear. I like this as an explanation for many of Mycroft's less savory behaviors.
The family of choice idea is lovely, and Lestrade's compassion is gruff but lovable.

I know, I know, I'm coming very late to these but here I am at last. I love your Lestrade, he *cares* so much, even when he should know better, and it's going to drive him up the wall. I especially love him ripping Sherlock a new one for the way he treats victims, and family members and innocent bystanders. Lovely work dear...

I'm glad you liked it. It was one of those stories where the result on paper never really did justice to the idea in my head, I've never really been happy with it. I must dust off the various half-written Sherlock and Trek stories on my harddrive and get them posted. Things to do during a lazy August....
