care

Meg dumps the small package in Castiel’s lap a week later.

“You got mail,” she drawls, and she waits as if she thinks he might answer or react, but Castiel knows that if he sits still and quiet, he’s invisible.

She knocks her shoe against his bare foot. “It’s from Dean Hasselhoff.”

His feet are cold.

After making an irritated tsk sound, Meg hooks the package back up, and Castiel hears the sound of paper tearing, but he sits motionless, blinks slowly.

“Well, whaddya know.”

And suddenly she’s at face level, her eyes gleaming dark at him, her eyebrow a perfect, insolent arch. He feels her fingers touch the top of his foot, grits his teeth against the chill slide of them around his ankle, but then there is softness, warmth.

“Socks,” she declares, her expression amused, and she winks spiky black lashes at him as she tugs fabric up around the other foot, before setting it down on the floor and resting her hand on his thigh. “And a billet-doux,” she adds, her voice teasing. “Want me to read-”

“No…”

It’s the first word he has said, croaks out of him harshly, and just like he knew it would, it leads the devil straight to him.

“He isn’t real,” she says, after a moment when his whole body locks tight with terror. “Look at me.”

Castiel tears his gaze away from the grinning face behind her, fixes his eyes back to hers.

“He isn’t real,” she tells him again, and when she smiles her teeth are sharp and feral. “But I am.”

Sorry! I had this idea for a coda based on care packages Dean might send to Cas, and it went a tad bleaker than I intended.
I blame murron, who corrupted me even more than I already was with Earth Begins...
