Today, my goal is to see if I can find a way to make this summarizing of the day's articles actually take only a few minutes. "Problem" is, I get sucked in and start satisfying my own curiosity.

Sep 10,1939 ROOSEVELT UNIFIES WHITE HOUSE TASKS
Sep 10,1939 BRITISH CANT WIN, GOERING ASSERTS
Goering, Marshall of German forces, says that the Germans have no issue with France, that they believe the French have been stirred up by British rhetoric, and accuses the British of being "willing to fight to the last Frenchman."
Sep 10,1939 PLEDGE AT LONDON
Britain is determined to "see it through" and is acting on the assumption that the war will last three years or more.
Sep 10,1939 RUSSIANS ALARMED AT REICH ADVANCE
A factual account of small signs spotted here and there within Soviet territory that the Soviets were stepping up military preparations in light of Germany's rapid advance within Polish territory.
Sep 10,1939 WOOD WON IN WEST
The French are still making progress along the Western front.
Sep 10,1939 MAIN POLISH FORCE HELD, NOT USED YET
Sep 10,1939 POLES HOLDING CITY
Warsaw has not yet fallen; the Germans are sweeping around the city, attempting to take it "without further fighting," but fighting is already fierce. The Germans persist in their characterizations of fighting civilians as criminals, now calling them "saboteurs," and declaring that they can be "shot out of hand" for their crimes. They are also condemning both the Polish government for encouraging their citizens to resist and the British for broadcasting the Polish proclamations without comment or countermand.

Sep 10,1939 SEES WAR'S END IN A WEEK
Vienna is convinced that the war will end within a week. They believe the Soviets are mobilizing to take eastern Poland, which will cut off Polish resistance to Germany; German colonies will be returned; France and England will capitulate without a struggle; and all will be over and peaceful again. Optimism is high; cafes and theaters are full; the journalist comments that "No wounded have been brought to Vienna."

Sep 10,1939 CANADA PUTS WAR BEYOND ALL DOUBT
Canada joins with the British throne in being at war with the Germans, in spite of the economic benefits to Canada of remaining neutral -- various neutrality acts passed in the United States Congress prior to the outbreak of war made it very costly for a close trading partner of ours to enter the conflict, as they then fell under various interdictions designed to make it harder for us to be dragged into the war against our will.

Sep 10,1939 VOTE A DAY'S PAY WEEKLY TO POLAND
90,000 Poles living in New York State voted to each donate a day's pay each week, presumably to relief efforts or some such, if it could be done in accordance with the previously mentioned U.S. Neutrality Acts; the lawyer for their organization was investigating.

Sep 10,1939 PERMANENT PARLEY OF NEUTRALS ASKED
Sep 10,1939 Red Cross Chapters Offer Aid
Sep 10,1939 Guatemala Neutral in War
Sep 10,1939 SLOVAKS REGAIN REGIONS
This is one of those articles that makes my attempt at a speedy and efficient summation grind to a halt as I sit, appalled. In 1938, four powers (Germany, Italy, France, and Britain) sat at a negotiating table and carved up Czechoslovakia in response to Hitler's demand that Czechoslovakia give Germany the Sudetenland, that land held by Czechoslovakia that was, in Hitler's estimation, mostly inhabited by persons of the German race. In the process, these powers also awarded some Czechoslovakian land to Poland and some to Hungary. Now, and I'm not sure how the transition from Czechoslovakia to Slovakia came about, Slovakia is reclaiming that part of its territory that was given to the Polish, taking advantage of the Poles being thoroughly distracted by the Germans and unable to respond. This article claims that Slovakian troops have now retaken all territory taken by Poland in 1920, 1928, and 1938, that they have now stopped their advance, and that on September 13, their Parliament will consider a bill denying citizenship to Jews.

That last part turns my stomach.
Sep 10,1939 ASKS NAZI BOYCOTT GO ON
An official representing two Jewish-American organizations asks that a boycott of Nazi Germany continue at maximum strength so as to help cripple Hitler and help stop the war.
Sep 10,1939 AMERICANS ESCAPE BOMBING IN POLAND
Sep 10,1939 GERMANY EXPECTS BLOCKADE TO FAIL
Mostly, this is due to the fact that Germany expects neutral parties to continue to want to trade with Germany for the sake of maintaining their neutrality (is it just me, or does this hint at a "our U-boats will attack your ships if you don't trade with us"?), and thus the neutral parties will find their way around the blockade.

Sep 10,1939 London Obituary Column On Service Deaths Begun
Sep 10,1939 Britain Bars Photos From Mails
Sep 10,1939 ODD DUTCH VESSEL BRINGS 634 TO U. S.
The vessel is odd mostly in that it does not typically cross the Atlantic, being typically used to go from the Netherlands to the Dutch East Indies, and is manned by Javanese who wear turbans and go barefoot. The design of the ship itself is much different from the typical design of Atlantic-crossing vessels.
Sep 10,1939 REICH RADIO RUSE CHARGED
Sep 10,1939 BRITISH PROCLAIM MASTERY OF SEAS
Sep 10,1939 CASUALTY RATE OF NAZIS
Germany is declaring 9 killed and 40 wounded for every 10,000 men fighting against Poland, for a total of 1,800 killed and 8,000 wounded out of 2,000,000 men.
Sep 10,1939 U.S. Shuts 2 War-Zone Consulates
Consulates closed in Breslau, Germany and Strasbourg, France, concurrently with precautionary evacuation of civilian populations, as both towns are within the area of probable military activity.
Sep 10,1939 Incidents in European Conflict
The Polish Ambassador and the French Foreign Minister signed an accord creating a Polish legion within France. South Africa is backing out of a previous arrangement to sell goods to Germany worth over six million British pounds, proposing to sell the goods elsewhere instead. Tommy Farr, a British boxer known to Americans, enlisted in the Royal Air Force.
Sep 10,1939 OLD RED-NAZI DEAL HINTED
Odd hints of secret accords: "The French police, raiding the home of a former German journalist in France today, discovered a bronze medal decorated with the Nazi swastika and the Soviet hammer and sickle and bearing the date 1934. This curious find was taken as evidence of a secret German-Russian accord dat-ing back at least five years. The journalist, formerly correspondent of the National Allgemeine Zeitung, left France on the day of the announcement of the German-Russian accord."
Sep 10,1939 Lines at Food Markets
Sep 10,1939 Summary of Marshal Goering's Speech to the Reich Munitions Workers
This speech is a mastery of spin, with every sin of Germany's defended and every demand on the part of Britain or Poland denounced. It's very weird, and an excellent example of deceptive rhetoric.
Sep 10,1939 CZECH LEGION IS WARNED
Czechs are being warned not to join with foreign military organizations. Of course, this is as the Czech government is losing its independence from Germany; the last known location of the Czech legion, 18,000 strong (note the number of Germans fighting in Poland, in the millions, noted above), was in Lodz.
