LiveJournal Tracking Statistics Update

Sep 17, 2007 23:39

From lj_biz, the official LJ business community: Starting September 27th, LiveJournal will be working with Omniture, a website analytics service. Omniture will collect information on approximately 5% of journals and communities, chosen randomly, using a standard browser cookie.

lj_biz has announced that following will be tracked:
* Journal pages
* Profile pages
* Friends pages
* Comment pages.

However, Omniture will not have access to friends-only or private entries, nor private data, such as payment or account information.

The following information will be obtained:
* What browser you're using
* What site scheme you use
* Your window size
* How site users travel through Livejournal. ("What are the common links, where are people going after viewing their friends page, what people are or aren't clicking on), and things like how many page views different parts of the site get.")

This information will only be available to LiveJournal and not to third parties.

LiveJournal members will have the ability to set their journals to opt-out, meaning that no one who surfs their journal, friends-list or profile -- even non-LJ member readers -- will be tracked by Omniture.

Most websites do track this information without providing an opt-out setting to their members.

However, considering Six Apart's previous, repeated failures to offer full business practice transparency to their users, I think it's fairly safe to assume that the above list of items being tracked is incomplete.

This journal will therefore be opting out of the analysis.

If you’d like to opt out, go to the Admin Console and type "set opt_exclude_stats 1" and click "Execute". Once a person opts out once, they will not need to opt out again.

If you own a community and would like to opt it out, instructions on how to do so can be found in this thread.
