~This is your fault, you chose this path

Okay, I mentioned Undertale in the last entry, right? As you can guess from the trailer/gimmick, you can spare every monster you see... or you can kill them. You can kill them all. This is what's known as Genocide run, or a Murder run as I call it since it rolls off the tongue better I think ( Read more... )

art, if you squint it could be a review, undertale

It's VERY good. And I recommend playing it as unspoilered as possible if you are going to play it.

I've also seen it called a No Mercy run. (tv tropes kind of treats the name Genocide run as a bit of a spoiler. :O)

I'm not sure what happens if you do a run just killing everyone you see without being completely thorough, but I'm sure there's a route for it.
From what I've gathered from reading up about it, you would get a variation of the neutral ending doing it this way. There ARE gradations on the neutral ending, but the differences aren't nearly as extreme (obviously) as the ones between pure pacifism and pure murder. Like...the key to getting the golden ending involves befriending all of the key characters, right? So anything that locks you out of making full friends with anyone (including them not being around anymore to befriend, obviously), is going to lock you into the neutral path, but I SUSPECT that beyond that MOST of the core story checkpoints are going to remain the same as they would for a true ( ... )

Haha No Mercy also works!

Aaaah so many variations in the endings. SO CURIOUS. I wonder at what point you can break the plotline by killing a character?

YOU'D THINK THERE'D BE THOUGHT OUT CONSEQUENCES FOR ALL OF IT

;_;

Oh, wow, this is absolutely fascinating. And horrible. I'm sorry this game is wrecking you, but your entries about it are so, so interesting.

I played the demo and Flowey gave me a really vicious lecture for eating some vegetables. I THOUGHT THAT WAS WHAT THE VEGETABLES WANTED. What are people supposed to eat in this universe where plants are self-aware? I'M PRETTY SURE THAT CINNAMON-BUTTERSCOTCH PIE WASN'T JUST MADE OF ROCKS. AND IT SEEMS THAT ROCKS ARE ALSO SELF-AWARE, GIVEN THAT ROCK-PUSHING PUZZLE.

But I was intrigued enough to buy the full game.

I'm pretty near the beginning - going through Papyrus's puzzles - and I haven't killed anything, and yet something about this game (maybe what I've heard about murder runs? maybe the knowledge that actions on one playthrough can permanently affect another (which in a weird way makes me feel that other people's murder runs have somehow affected the universe in my game, even though there are no external signs of it)? maybe that 'don't eat your vegetables' lecture?) creeps me out so badly that it woke me up suddenly at two in the morning. I wanted to maybe kill a couple of things in my first run so I could do a proper pacifist ( ... )

haha DID YOU DEVOUR A VEGETOID, IS THAT WHAT HAPPENED
cause i did that my first run as a pacifist to one vegetoid and i THINK it still left me clear for full pacifist, so it's possible that got taken out of the demo. :B

A CONTINUUM OF UNDERTALE EXISTENCES, each murder run burdening characters with knowledge from another doomed timeline. man that'd be so meta.
DON'T WORRY THOUGH if you are true to your heart and kind, then your love for the world will pull you through. THERE ARE SOME CREEPY THINGS IN IT THOUGH but nothing like what happens in a murder run haha.

There IS a difference between doing a pacifist run your first time, and a pacifist run the second time! It's really a matter of preference. :o But the ONLY thing that'll lock you out of a good ending forever is the murder run, so do not worry!

I MUST ADMIT THERE IS SOMETHING MORE VISCERAL ABOUT DOING IT YOURSELF AS OPPOSED TO WATCHING IT

PREPARE YOURSELF EMOTIONALLY
