For the most part, the movies don't. Mewtwo both does and doesn't - his escape from Rocket HQ explains Ash fighting J&J for Earth Badge instead of Giovanni, but the bulk of the movie didn't even happen (thanks to Mewtwo resetting time.) None of the other movies connects to the series at all

According to the show Tobias didn't cheat or they wouldn't have let him get a single gym badge. Even though Darkrai is banned in game tournaments, there are still plenty of overused legendaries who are legal to use. So the correlation here is that Tobias is "that guy". The one who rolls into a tournament with legendaries and ruins any possibility of fun. I agree that Paul is way more IV/EV, but I think he also represents the Pokemon game player who only chooses "the useful ones" to have in a party when trying to get gym badges.
Oh, and that thing with Pikachu? Completely lame. It's like, okay we get it. Ash had to lose to Trip so the rivalry could form. Pikachu couldn't do any electricity moves and looked severely weakened after trying Volt Tackle. Whatever. But that he lost to Panpour was unacceptable. Because you're right, Pikachu is really high level. He'd have to get hit with a ridiculous number of attacks to go down, and he'd only have to tag Panpour with one attack to win. Thunderbolt/Volt Tackle would be overkill. But nope! He

Except for mewtwo Ash is a herp a derp when it comes to other legendary pokemon. He has seen Celibi several times, the dogs a couple of times. Ash does remember mewtwo though thanks to the TV special mewtwo returns. Still It just seems like with every season ash gets a bit more plain. you would think by now he would be able to tell what type a pokemon was by basic appearances.

1. Brock with pillow soooo cuuuuuute and slightly pathetic 2. Latias being basically silent throughout the movie weirded me out a bit too. I watched it in English though maybe it's different type of silence. Japanese silence. 3. Brock's reaction to Latias transformation is absolutely priceless 4. KABUTOBOOSE HAHAHA 5. So wait the mystical defense ancient machinarium thing makes shitty iron barriers pop up? Taht seems a bit pissweak 6. since when does electricity cut things why didn't I know about this 7.
