COMIC-CON REPORT IF YOU'RE INTERESTED
COMICON WAS PRETTY NEAT i was there for Friday Saturday and Sunday (through some clever tag wrangling help) with
devilishkurumi and
xxaxellexx and saw some neat stuff boy howdy
sadly missed the protestors on thursday but what can you do
First off, the street signs were done in Klingon.
this is nerd town now
Anyway mostly roamed around on Friday, although I did sit down for a few panels I think. Frick I never know how to organize these write-ups.
WELL IMPORTANTLY I got to sit in on Berkeley Breathed's panel, which was so awesome. I've been a fan of Bloom County/Outland/Opus for ages, one of my favorite comics. So getting to see him in real life was really cool. :D
He seems like a nice guy and seemed totally overwhelmed by the amount of people there, and the award they surprised him with. :D He showed us some comics and storyboards and clips of the Opus movie that never came about, and some letters he and Bill Watterson exchanged, and talked about where some of his ideas came from, and all in all it was really neat.
One of the things he said really struck me though. This was like his first Comiccon, and he was just amazed at all the creative energy going through the whole thing. One of the things that fascinated him was where ideas came from, and being able to trace them to their source. How a poster inspired Gladiator, that sort of thing. But he mentioned that he thought of himself more as a writer than as an artist. He didn't just draw things for the sake of drawing them... he always had a story behind them, or a story to be told with them, and it just naturally came out as comics most of the time. Sort of writing through art. And it was weird how much I could relate to that. The majority of my sketchbook is taken up with comics, and while I do have pages every now and then that are just heads or faces (when I'm trying new things or trying to get something to look right), or stand alone shots of things, almost everything I draw is focused on getting across a specific idea or concept, a story in a way. Like 90% of it is comics, no joke. It's just how I tend to think when I draw. :O I just never thought of things that way before.
SO THAT PANEL WAS REALLY NEAT
We also went to the live Rifftrax thing which was so awesome. There's nothing like being in a room with hundreds of other people watching a Rifftrax, the energy just feeds off itself. I'VE ALWAYS FELT LIKE MSTS ARE BETTER WITH LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE AND IT WAS SO AMAZING
also the guys were all witty and fun and i loved them and aaa it was so great. They did a vote for which movie they'd riff next, and Last Airbender and Clash of the Titans won, although some great stuff got thrown out there. Like
Vampire's Kiss! But i guess you wouldn't really have to add much to that movie.
Some other great stuff that got thrown out was Hook and Bladerunner and Zardoz. They were THIS close to Zardoz but in the end thought it'd be too hard for people to get a hold of. People got really offended about Bladerunner but I think that'd be awesome, and I love Bladerunner. BASICALLY I WOULD LOVE RIFFTRAX FOR MOVIES I LOVE
IF I CAN'T LAUGH AT SOMETHING I LOVE THEN WHAT'S THE POINT MAN??
I also went and saw a panel for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia on Sunday where I got to see one of the new episodes early. :D It was so awesome, the whole cast was there and they sang and answered questions and aaaaaa AAAAAAA YOU GUYS
I wanted to get into a Fallout and Epic Mickey panels but they ended up overflowing too quickly, curses. Also missed an Adventure Time panel which sucks cause they were giving out Finn hats. AH WELL.
Also wanted to see the new Tommy Wiseau thing (The House that Dripped Blood on Alex!) that was screening one night, but it was so late and we were so exhausted we couldn't pull it off. I'M SURE I'LL SEE IT SOMEDAY.
On Saturday I think it was I ended up feeling really lightheaded while wandering the exhibit hall and such (I think cause I had coffee that morning, which makes me super jittery, as well as wandering around on low food/sleep/people everywhere so on so on), but I also saw the Rifftrax guys were signing autographs and such, so I dropped off my stuff with Kurumi and co and went to go wait in line. By the time I went up there I was feeling super woozy and sick BUT I STUCK IT OUT
I was also cosplaying which they seemed a bit puzzled at, haha. Other people told them long stories or reminisced with them and they chatted a lot but I was too out of it to think of anything to say, so I asked them to sign my sketchbook and just stared at them all :D like an idiot. BUT THEY DID and they were nice to me and aaaa i wish i had been a bit more coherent, I would've told them my first MST story but oh well
they signed my sketchbook eeeeeeeeeeeeeee
On the walk back I actually had to sit down cause I felt like I was going to pass out/throw up everywhere, BUT i managed to conquer it. Although it was touch and go for a bit there, haha. I left my phone in my bag too so I was sitting in this hallway like fifty feet from everyone and unable to tell them what was going on. BUT I DID MAKE IT AFTER ALL. Eventually.
I got an Elder Sign necklace and some neat stuff and woooo it was great. Also I apparently went mad and bought a Kaito ufo catcher for no apparently reason. I GUESS I LIKE KAITO MORE THAN I THOUGHT? self why you do this
So many people there, so many neat costumes. Didn't see any Hunters, oddly, although I did see a Nick, Ellis, and Zoey wandering around. Also lots of TF2 cosplayers. I DIDN'T TAKE MANY PICTURES THOUGH BUT
this is for
kitty_nakoji That Raiden even had glowy lights that worked on his visor :O I asked him if he was gonna go cut things but I don't think he heard me. I think his helmet was on pretty tight, haha.
this is the coolest thing i've ever seen at any con anywhere
as for non-con hijinx, I was regularly laughing hard enough to give myself a headache/bring tears to my eyes SO THAT SHOULD TELL YOU SOMETHING
many stories exchanged about rockets and magma grunts failing everywhere
I also managed to trick Kurumi into drinking vodka-laced Clamato, hahahaha. Although I did drink some myself in penance. We watched The Room and goofed around and it was great fun as always. YOU GUYS ARE GREAT I LOVE HANGING OUT WITH YOU EVERY YEAR ♥
THAT'S ALL I CAN THINK OF REALLY perhaps more later
