~Fun with Kyrandia - Hope you've got a pencil and paper

Jan 23, 2008 15:41

CAUSE YOU'RE GOING TO BE MAKING SOME MAPS, BOY HOWDY.

Before we get to that though, tadah! Uploaded a vid from QFG3 with Arne Saknoosen, friendly earth pig that I now realize is a direct...something of Cerebus. I'm not sure if it's an homage or a parody, since I'm not sure if this came out before Dave Sim went completely insane or not. EITHER WAY FUN TIMES.

I also saw Cloverfield, which was super neat and I totally recommend it (although it may make you motion sick. I felt fine, but I know it can get to some people), and Sweeney Todd, which was alright. I've been fond of Sweeney Todd for a while now (2000/2001? I specifically remember first listening to the soundtrack while writing that loopy christmas fic years and years ago) so seeing people referencing it now when it was pretty obscure before is kind of weird for me. :O I'm really not used to people talking about it at all.
Anyway, the movie was alright really, although I didn't think Toby would be that young cause that kind of makes some things a little, uh, awkward (doesn't Mrs. Lovett seduce Toby at one point?), and Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter really can't sing at all. Which kind of sucks since they're sort of the leads. They were a bit weak. Although I have to admit hearing Sweeney like, an octave higher than usual made certain songs rather hilarious interesting.
But everyone else did a bangup job, I think. Toby really could sing. I was also a bit D: about how they cut out Kiss Me, since I think that song is terribly cute, and how they cut out most of God That's Good! and the crowd calling out and everything (although really a lot of that song revolves around the chair not being there, and for some reason they decided to put it in early? okay, sure) and also trimmed bits of A Little Priest (and all the fun laughing in that, come on guys!) and also cut out the bit at the beginning where the beggar lady propositions Sweeney for sex and is all HEY DON'T I KNOW YOU MISTER which made it a bit weird when they referenced that later since, you know, that was no longer a callback but whatever, and NO BALLAD OF SWEENEY TODD D: SADFACE. I kept expecting them to go into it and then they never did. Which was a bit weird since it reprises like, CONSTANTLY throughout the whole thing. And the climax of My Friends is kind of meh without the Ballad coming in full swing at that point. No power. :< And no work whistle either, I MISS THAT WHISTLE.
But really, not that bad. Not how I pictured it personally but hey, that's just me. I wasn't really expecting that anyway, so I'm not all RARRGH THIS WAS A TRAVESTY AJSUIHAGHAJG like some people. The INCREDIBLY BRIGHT RED BLOOD made me lol something fierce though. Everytime someone started spurting blood I couldn't help going WOW LOOK AT ALL THAT RED TEMPERA PAINT. I understand it was a stylistic choice and such but that still didn't make it any less hilarious.
I actually wanted it to be MORE bloody, actually. I can't believe people went into it and were shocked at the amount of blood. YOU'RE JOKING, RIGHT? SERIOUSLY?
Also the ending made me lol too because it was the most melodramatic thing ever. So Burton. AND THEN HE BLED ALL OVER HER FACE, ABLOOBLOOBLOO but hahaha I dunno it's hard for me to take something like that seriously. Although Toby didn't go crazy? Eh, whatever.
Good fun though.

Darn it, my mouse keeps shooting all over the screen randomly. This is annoying.

Anyway, WHAT IS BRANDON UP TO? Let's find out! By the way, join screencappery.

Previous Editions

A new useless gem, hurray! Bad weather in Kyrandia must be interesting.

Now that I've got my special yellow gem, I'LL SHOW YOU, SNAKEY! I BET IT SHOOTS LASERS!

SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR TREE, SNAKEY

Oh, is that what that does.
Note that Kyrandia doesn't TELL you that this is what this gem does. And if you use it when you're NOT poisoned, it won't tell you anything. YOU JUST HAVE TO ASSUME THAT HEY, IF I GET BITTEN BY THE SNAKE, THESE RANDOM YELLOW SPARKLES WILL SAVE ME. Also note that using the gem BEFORE you get bitten, like it would PROTECT you from the snake, will not work. When I was first playing this, I thought the gem would protect me rather than heal me, and so when it failed, I was convinced that the gem was unrelated. GOT STUCK FOR A WEEK OR SOMETHING BEFORE I FIGURED IT OUT.
Also keep in mind that it takes a while for the gem to recharge too, so if you screw it up you don't have time to save yourself. AWESOME.
Kyrandia does this CONSTANTLY.

FINALLY, THE RUBY IS MINE, ALL MINE!

Fine, I'll just take my ONE ruby then. >(

DARN IT I WANT TO BURN SOME ROSES, WHAT KIND OF LAME INCENDIARY ALTAR IS THIS

Surely, since getting this ruby was something of a puzzle, it is supposed to be used to solve THIS puzzle, whatever it is.

DARN IT

Brandon randomly comments on things if you click him. :D

Another somewhat random puzzle - if you use the yellow gem under the bird, it'll heal the bird! WOULD YOU HAVE FIGURED THIS OUT? IT TOOK ME A WHILE because I didn't think that the gem could just heal whatever it feels like.

IT BETTER

Hey Nolby want a quill

Ah whatever. OFF TO DARM

Brandywine: pfft, whatever.

LOOK OUT, BRANDON WILL POINT OUT THE PLOTHOLES IN YOU NEXT

When no spells will work, got it. Wait, what?

Brandywine: >(

Well that explains where all the gemstones are coming from. THANKS FOR TELLING ME WHAT STONE GOES TO WHAT SEASON THOUGH THAT'S AWESOME I GUESS I'LL JUST GUESS. ALSO THANKS FOR THE VAGUE THING ABOUT THE SUNSTONE, AWESOME.
Yes, I know it's a sunstone. Shh.

That's right, the sunstone is in the river here. How did I find this? This time, I actually honestly found it by accident. THERE'S NO REAL HINT TELLING YOU THIS except that Brandon says the rock at the bottom is "pretty". You may have to click the river multiple times, no less. I JUST GOT LUCKY but I actually was wandering around for a while all wtf where is my stone you old geezer thanks for nothing >(

WELL GOT THAT DONE AT LEAST

As you can see, I just dumped them all here cause of limited inventory space and the like. HMM, WHAT COULD BE NEXT? I WILL HAVE TO USE THE TIMEHONORED METHOD OF "GUESSING RANDOMLY"

I SURE WISH YOU'D TELL ME THEN

DARN IT WHAT AM I MISSING AIRAHGFHJADGKA

So I had to go wandering back to through the woods to find some more frigging gemstones. Darn it.

Okay, let's try this again.

ALRIGHT ANOTHER ONE DOWN HURRAY

I put it in twice since I loaded my game a few times doing this cause I was too lazy to go find more gemstones everytime I screwed it up.

IS THIS MAKING SENSE TO ANY OF YOU? CAUSE IT'S NOT TO ME, I'M JUST GUESSING.

I actually already guessed that the ruby would be the last one, I just wanted to get rid of all those extra stones lying around.

And what a quest it was.

Hahahahahaha at least Brandon's got a good attitude about this nonsense.

"And my feet hurt. >("

I swear these two are married.

God I hate the labryinth so much. YOU'LL SEE.

Wow, that ice was thinner than I thought.

Ah, here we go. The Serpent's Grotto (The Cavern) is actually a nice, simple, kind of creepy, very atmospheric kind of melody, and very pleasant to listen to at first. However, with the amount of time you're going to be spending in these caves, this music will eventually drive you insane. I swear to god. It's a shame since it's actually a really neat song in general. Frigging mazes.
Ominous Cavern is a nice DoD remix of it, full of some awesome guitars and such. Makes it much more in your face. :D

Frigging fireberries. YOU WILL ALWAYS REMIND ME OF THIS HORRIBLE MAZE.

Ominous words.

I got a bit overzealous here. In reality, the most you will probably ever need to carry at one time is four fireberries.

Note the color of the fireberries.

HEY THIS ROOM LOOKS AWESOME

I could have told you that would happen, Brandon.
THAT'S RIGHT, YOU'RE STUCK IN HERE! HURRAY!

And yes, Fireberries only last about three screens, then they burn up in your inventory, leaving you lightless. This means that no matter how many fireberries you carry, you can only go three screens with them before they burn out.
What this means is that in the oncoming maze, you can only ever really go three screens in any given direction before having to backtrack, or, if you're lucky, stumbling across a fireberry bush or some important place.
That's what makes this maze so FUN!
Basically, what you are going to want to do is make a map. I already made one, but you'll probably want to make one yourself because this has the added bonus of you personally dropping a fireberry in each room. If you drop a fireberry in a room, it will always remain lit. This makes backtracking through the maze a million times easier, and if you're going through yourself, you'll drop a berry everytime you make a room on your map, and it will save you some work in a way.
If you're in a room with no light, you die. :D

HMM.

Stupid magic flute, DO SOMETHING.

I should probably check what this scroll does sometime. Thankfully this isn't a one-shot scroll or something. THAT would suck.

Well that was pointless.

Anyway, every room in this place looks almost the same. They light up to different degrees depending on the freshness of the berry before you drop it. I hate this place so much.

Aha, here's one of the things we're looking for in this place. Rocks. Why would you need rocks? WELL, WHO KNOWS. IT'S THERE, SO YOU PICK IT UP. YOU PICK IT UP RIGHT NOW. IT'S OBVIOUSLY IMPORTANT.
There are five rocks scattered through the maze, and you have to find them all.

After a lot of pointless wandering, hey! Looks like we found something!

"I just need a place to crash until my paycheck clears, come on dude."

These two have something going on.

That's awesome there's just this tiny matter of WHAT THE #$#@ IS EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT

...the moon?

"We also happen to be shimmering, incorporeal balls of purple light, but that's neither here nor there!"

Oh great, yeah, thanks.

Well hey there you go.

And that's all the explanation you get! Ha ha!

Dang, hmm. I bet it's a gemstone or something.

Anyway after MORE WANDERING

I WISH.

WELL FINE POINTLESS ROOM JUST BE THAT WAY I'LL TAKE MY ROCK AND GO

Blah blah backtracking

This room is utterly pointless. I swear to god. I have no idea why it's even here.
It even has its own theme! WHY.

Not... really?

Darn it.

Yes, that's what your rocks are for. That pulley system! Ha ha! You cannot imprison me forever, Serpent's Grotto!

Yes, Brandon ricocheted it off the wall and landed it! Impressive!

BRANDON NO IT TOOK ME LIKE AN HOUR TO GET THESE ROCKS

JSIUGHAHDGHAGHAYUHGAHHSAJJSGIJ

Thank god.
So at this point I actually ended up getting stuck, since I couldn't figure out how to fix the moon altar, or how to cross the pit, or what I was supposed to DO. So I wandered and wandered and wandered, and eventually in yet another check of each room...

THERE WAS A GOLD COIN IN HERE. DID YOU SEE IT THE FIRST TIME? IT BLENDS IN PERFECTLY WITH THE BACKGROUND. I SWEAR TO GOD.

DARN IT.
So I ended up wandering and wandering and wandering SOME MORE and finally got frustrated and quit. When I came back, I decided to just start back in the forest and see if maybe there was something I missed.

I HATE YOU GOLD COIN, BE GONE FROM ME.

OH SCREW YOU KYRANDIA

FINALLY.

Hey, neat!
When you're a wisp it plays this jaunty little theme.

The convenient thing about your Will o Wisp form is that it will light up any areas you go into, thus making fireberries unnecessary. HURRAY.

Fun note - be careful clicking on this apple, as you may accidentally click on the entrance to the cave and go back inside, which will be dark since you're no longer a wisp, and you'll die! :D I didn't do this, but it's very easy.

What a lovely view.

Tree: I DISAGREE!

OH NO WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO BRANDON NOW?!?

And for the heck of it, that survey I do every year that I was really lazy about this year. HURRAH.

1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?:
I WENT TO INDIA.
THAT WAS PRETTY AWESOME.

2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't do New Year's resolutions.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
I don't think so.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
NOT THIS YEAR! I think.

5. What countries did you visit?
INDIA, BAM!

6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
I wish this one person would fall off the earth so I would never have to see them or interact with them ever again. I really want this to happen, and yet it never does.
There are a few people I wish would just drop dead, actually, but mostly it's directed at one person.

7. What dates from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Hahahaha I am bad with dates. When I had that breakdown, that'll probably stick with me. And finally finishing Mambolawyer. And everything that happened in India, and random other small things. Sometimes I'm glad I keep an LJ cause otherwise all this would just mix into one huge mess in my mind. HURRAY BAD MEMORY.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I dunno, I have to admit I am pretty proud of Mambolawyer still, even though when I look at it I still see tons of mistakes. AT LEAST I FINISHED IT. HAHAHAHA.

9. What was your biggest failure?
The whole breakdown and everything leading up to it was a huge failure on my part that I still feel bad about. Ugh. Why did I do that to myself. AJfuiahsghahg.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Not really, that I remember. Apart from colds or the like. I think.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
I DON'T EVEN KNOW MAN THERE ARE SO MANY AWESOME GAMES AND STUFF OUT LATELY
And all my most awesome stuff was given to me by other people. :D

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Probably everyone who still puts up with me and all this fannish garbage. HURRAY!

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Same person as every year. Your continued existence only makes me angrier and more hateful. If only the sheer force of my hatred for you could make you spontaenously combust.
Argh.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Games, food, things like that.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
BRAWL IS GOING TO BE AWESOME GUYS OMG

16. What songs will always remind you of 2007?
Probably the CD I got in India, stuff people sent me, that kind of thing... it's hard to say since I have so much of it.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i) happier or sadder?
I dunno, about the same.
ii) thinner or fatter?
Probably the same.
iii) richer or poorer?
Same, probably.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Actually telling people how I feel instead of bottling everything up inside. IT'S HARD FOR ME OKAY.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Freaking out? That would have made the year much better I think.

20. How will you be spending the holidays?
Dorking around, no doubt.

22. Did you fall in love in 2007?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

23. How many one night stands?
A BAZILLION, ONE EVERY HOUR, ENDLESS ROWS OF PEOPLE LINED UP DOWN THE STREET

24. What were your favorite TV programs?
I dunno if there's anything new in 2007 I really got interested in... Meerkat Manor, maybe? I DUNNO.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Actually, yes!

26. What was the best book you read?
Hmm... I dunno. I READ A LOT OF LOVECRAFT IN INDIA AND ENJOYED IT although I dunno if I'd say that was the best necessarily.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
HIMESH RESHAMMIYA IS PRETTY AWESOME GUYS

28. What did you want and get?
I didn't really want much, and I mostly got it so I'm very content. :D

29. What did you want and not get?
Uh...hmm. I dunno. :O I guess I still need to get that adapter for my tablet so it can use a usb port. I should look into that.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Uh...hmm. I dunno, really. I don't remember what came out this year. :B

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I dorked around with friends AND IT WAS FUN. I TURNED 106.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Not freaking out, if that counts. Also getting into grad school, although I must admit that is more my fault than anything else because I've been lazy.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?
lol

34. What kept you sane?
Friends and family, certain games and the like. NOTHING UNUSUAL.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I STILL LIKE SPORTACUS A LOT. But I don't know if he counts. :B

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
I'm not very knowledgable about Politics, so I don't like to spout off uninformed opinions, generally.

37. Who did you miss?
FUNKMEISTER PROBABLY and everyone else who comes and goes.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I've met some awesome people through each fandom I go through. :D I FORGET WHEN I MEET ALL OF YOU I FEEL LIKE I'VE KNOWN YOU FOREVER

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007:
If you're in a situation that's making you freak out, GET OUT OF THE SITUATION. DON'T WAIT TO SEE IF IT WILL STOP. GET OUT NOW.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Ah, these are always so hard. Let's see...I dunno...ah!

I love myself today
Not like yesterday
I'm cool
I'm calm
I'm gonna be okay

THERE NOW THAT WILL STOP BUGGING ME
