Hopping from desk to desk, I was determined to reach the top floor. With each desk came a face I wasn't sure I recognized, and to the end of each maze of desks was a ladder that took me to the next floor. When I had almost reached the top, I came to a classroom with no ladder. The class gazed with emotionless eyes as I tried to touch the roof with my fingertips. The teacher walked towards the closet to find a ladder, and as I followed, my nose began to close. I gasped for air, but I choked with each breathe.
My eyes opened and noticed the time on my watch: 9:43am. I've been waking up at noon or sometime after for the past few weeks, and I suddenly wake up at a reasonable time? Last night, I had set my alarm to ring at 10:00am. It must be a mental thing.
Bob called me last night. He and Fred already moved in the dorm room.
"Do you want a round table or a square table [for the commons area]?" asked Bob.
"Whichever is fine," I replied.
MTV did a True Life special on people moving back to the Gulf Coast. I didn't know any of the people on the show, and I didn't watch enough of it to see any places I recognized. One of them was from Biloxi, though.
I remember what life was like a year ago, hearing the hurricane blow outside, watching a hole rip through my neighbor's house as I peeked through my window. Life is different now, and rather than worry about a destructive force of nature-Hurricane Ernesto is hitting Florida, I hear-my mind is locked on readjusting to Milwaukee life.
"That's life," Linda V said to me yesterday, in a conversation about my future after graduation.
I had a fun summer, but I have to let it go, and the more I fight change, the harder it becomes.
I still have to print out my plane tickets and finish packing. I'll readjust to Milwaukee life, but it gets lonely out there. I have a bigger heart at home, only because I have friends here to nurture it.
Linda V and Jason are returning to college. Casey and Ken are getting married. Peter is preparing for Japan. It's time for me to start my adventure as well.
