#1 Because it’s fun.
It's fun and sunshine-y and works like a happy pill. Have I mentioned that it’s fun? And the actors clearly agree.
#2 Because Danny + Steve =
OTP.
See, the thing is that I like differences, I like contrasts, and boys who snark at each other fascinate me - remember Arthur and Merlin’s first meeting? They didn’t like each other, hell no, but they were anything but indifferent. Arthur and Eames? Like water and fire. Brendon and Ryan? It was a well-known fact that they had some arguments about lyrics, about music, about many things, and in the band, I’d say they were the two most likely to bitch and make up. So, there’s tension. I like tension. Tension is a beautiful thing to work with because it means the characters already have a connection, and a connection can change and grow.
And H50 is doing a really good job making that connection grow, right now. After 13 episodes, Danny and Steve have grown to know and like each other; they’re partners even if they still have their arguments, even if they’re still very different and Danny wears ties and Steve likes to take off his shirt. Or, as Danny put it: “I have never liked you more than in this moment right now. It’s beautiful.”
It’s us against the world, kind of like Panic used to be, kind of like Merlin and Arthur used to be in Season 1. It’s beautiful.
#3 Because their car conversations are the best thing ever.
There could be an entire show devoted just to
Danny and Steve in a car:
When Steve is driving Danny’s car (as he usually does) and the two of them are talking, it’s not just about the case; the two of them in a car is like an honesty zone, where they can trust each other that what’s said in the car, stays in the car. (On that
note.)
#4 Because it has layers.
The characters are interesting and likeable; Kono and Chin provide a great balance to Steve and Danny. They all have some baggage, they all have quirks. Even though it’s fun to watch, there is enough angst potential to make for great fandom times. As proven in this
fanvid, which is absolutely stunning.
(Yes, a show’s fandom potential matters to me. Can you look me in the eye and honestly tell me it doesn’t cross your mind when you watch a movie or the pilot of a new series? Hmm?)
#5 Because it’s all about family.
Now, this could potentially end in cheesy disaster, but here, it’s on a level that works for me. Steve and his family baggage, Danny and Grace, Chin and Kono, even the bad guys aren’t all bad because they do care about their families. Last but not least, H50 forms its own little family.
Obviously.
#6 Because it has shirtless Alex O’Loughlin.
C’mon, you think it’s awesome, too.
#7 Because it gives me a reason to write Surfer!Steve AU
Look, okay, remember Steve mentioning how that dude in 1x13 taught him and Mary how to surf when they were little kids? So, if their mom had actually had a car accident and there’d be no reason to ship them off to the mainland, then they would have grown up surfing. And then opened a surf shop, because it’s always a good thing to earn money for doing something you’re good at.
Enter HPD Cop!Danny and Grace, who talked Danny into paying for surf lessons. Guess what shop they’ll go to if Chin is Danny’s partner and Kono works for Steve and Mary?
(What? I never said those reasons were in any way objective. Giving me an excuse to write surfer!fic is a perfectly legitimate reason to love a show.)
In conclusion: It's love.
On a different note, I'm slowly starting to upload more stuff to AO3, because while I'm bad at cross-posting, AO3 is awesome. Either way, whatever I upload can be found
here.
