It’s not like Sam doesn’t understand.

It’s not like he hasn’t been here himself.

There’s a certain symmetry to it, he supposes.

He trapped Lucifer in his body and then in a cage to prevent the apocalypse. Dean trapped Michael in his body and then in a different type of cage to prevent a different apocalypse.

Is all this part of Chuck’s plan?

After all, the angels seemed pretty convinced from the get-go that he and Dean were destined to say yes to Michael and Lucifer and, well, they did. Eventually. Maybe there is no escaping destiny. Maybe all Team Freewill has ever done is postpone it.

And Chuck always did like literary symmetry.

Sam recalls the desperate plan he’d hatched to take Lucifer out of the game; how he didn’t tell Dean what he was planning because he knew that Dean would try to talk him out of it.

Dean hugged Sam, awkward and from behind, then tried to walk out of his life with a ‘take care Sammy’ for exactly the same reason.

It’s not like either of them are unaware of the lengths they’re prepared to go to for each other.

That’s why Dean wants the box thrown to the bottom of the ocean. That’s not about creating an extra barricade for Michael. The Marianna trench is nothing to Michael. No, the depths of the sea are a barricade for Sam. To stop him from trying to rescue Dean.

Sam looks at his brother sitting on the hood beside him, sipping at a long neck.

He remembers how this feels. The hard won argument. The feeling of satisfaction. Followed by the bone-chilling dread.

Because really, in all honesty, you’d only thought as far ahead as being able to execute the plan and now that the path ahead is clear you’re looking down the barrel of its reality.

The realization that what you really just won was the right to be trapped and tortured for eternity.

Some prize.

Dean seems calm. Sam knows he’s not.

Sam also knows that the box isn’t going to the bottom of the ocean.

There is just no way.

In a few more beers Dean will tell him to keep fighting the good fight. He’ll rib him about being Chief, but he’ll encourage him to run a team of Hunters out of the bunker anyway.

He’ll wish Sam his own ideal life, just as Sam wished his own on Dean.

And Sam will agree. And he’ll lock Dean into the box. And then he’ll lock the box in the bunker’s dungeon while he works on a way to get rid of Michael for good.

There are some variables, of course.

Like…will Michael get free before Dean dies of thirst?  Sam hopes so. He doesn’t want Dean to go through the horror of that at all, never mind alone, in a box, and at least Michael can sustain Dean’s body until Sam figures out how to get rid of him.

But what if he can’t figure it out? What if decades pass? What then?

Sometimes you’ve got to think outside the box, so Sam’s got a contingency plan up his sleeve. A little trick he learned from Nick. It involves a hydraulic drill and an archangel blade and Sam’s perfectly well aware it will kill both Michael and Dean. That’s okay. He’s planning to turn the blade on himself straight after.

Because there is no way that he will allow Dean to be trapped in a box with Michael and tortured by him for all eternity. And if his brother is going into the Empty like Billie promised, there is no way he’s going alone.

Dean always figured they’d go out like Butch and Sundance. Sam’s never thought he was wrong.

Fin.
