Day 3: A female character you hated but grew to love
Dr Temperance ("Bones") Brennan
She intially really annoyed me as a character because I really felt like she was someone who existed on the page but did not exist as a real woman in the real world. This was mainly because I felt like she was depicted as far, far, far too socially naive for someone who is so intelligent.
My view has now changed. I now see her as someone essentially so thought-orientated, and so detail-intelligent, that she is socially awkward. This is not because she has zero capacity to empathize, but rather that her go-to mode of operating is always analogical - e.g. she will think of intellectual reasoning before thinking to set incidents in an emotional paradigm.
So anyway, I now like her a whole lot.
I like:
her smarts
her logic
her emotional vunerability
her independence
her willingness to concede that while she is often the outright expert, she is not expert in ALL fields
she is a good boss
her curiosity and enthusiasm
She has totally turned me around, and now I enjoy this show instead of consistently cringing.
