Now this is what I think of when I think of a Joss Whedon show.
It's really a shame Amy Acker was only available for a few episodes this season, because she did a seriously amazing job in the first one. In fact, I'd say that her story was even more interesting than Echo's so far.
Whiskey's and Echo's stories certainly bring up the idea of who owns the consciousness of imprints. As Dr Saunders, Whiskey doesn't want to 'die' by giving up that imprint, but on the flip side, there's Echo, who is beginning to remember not just her previous imprints, but her real identity, which leads me to think that a person's consciousness belongs to their body, not the person they've been imprinted with.
So obviously Whiskey/Dr Saunders has nothing to fear, in theory, but has been given real human fears by a sociopath in a sweater vest and, despite the intelligence and reason she's been given, cannot reconcile the fact that she does own her consciousness and won't have to give it up, even if she gives up the Dr Saunders imprint.
The Echo/Ballard storyline is becoming interesting, too, and I'm going to assume that Echo in her newly realised self-awareness is smart enough not to let on to Topher or Adelle that she's evolving. I hope Paul is smart enough not to let anyone know how much he knows about Echo's growth.
Overall, I thought the acting, even Eliza Dushku's, in this episode was excellent, and the hints of what's to come are ... well, typical Joss. This season is already awesome right out of the gate, whereas even the excellent season 2 of Buffy took a few episodes to get going, and Angel's second season also took until episode 3 to get into the first major arc.
Now maybe that's because Joss knows he may only have 13 episodes to tell the whole story, but of course, I'm hoping that despite low opening overnight ratings, the show can again justify renewal/back 9 pickup based on DVR, hulu and iTunes numbers, and its decreased budget.
Or maybe they can just imprint the Fox executives to renew it. Right?
