Girls Night Out - Cyndi Lauper & Rosie O'Donnell (posted on FB also)

Aug 10, 2009 11:00

Last night we ventured to Red Bank, NJ for the Cyndi Lauper show. Our seats were in the balcony and let me just say, I usually really enjoy front row balcony seats, but the sound at Count Basie theater in the balcony SUCKS! I have been to this theater in the past to see the Indigo Girls and the sound was great on the floor. Regardless, the show was still awesome!

Rosie came out and did about 45 minute standup. She was hysterical. Despite what I have been told about Rosie's persona and how she treats cast members when she is at Disney World, she is still incredibly funny. I think the last time I laughed that hard was for Ellen DeGeneres a few years ago. Of course there are other funny comedians, like George Lopez, but I don't go out of my way to see comedians typically. Anyway, Rosie talked about kids and menopause mostly as well as really laid into a guy who was in the third row talking on his cell phone (quite loudly). She was actually relentlessly giving him a hard time. Of course to the audience it was funny, yet, my guess she did it out being annoyed that people are that rude. It would fit her personality.

After her set, there was about a 30 minute intermission before Cyndi came out. Cyndi put on her usual excellent show. She has so much energy on stage and it is not just a rock concert it is an experience. I would think even if your not a huge fan of Cyndi, you would still enjoy her shows. I was never a fan when she first appeared in the 80's. In fact her music was more annoying and I always chalked her up to being a one album wonder, yet she has survived 20 years of making music/albums and still belts out everything perfectly. I also find her to be an interesting musician because she takes her songs such as She Bop, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, etc and tends to remix them slightly so your not always necessarily hearing the 'same' song you are used to hearing. Unless you see her in concert you might not totally understand how talented of a musician she really is, in fact throughout the concert she plays many different types of instruments.

She played her 'fan' favs such as She Bop, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, True Colors, Goonies R Good Enough, Money Changes Everything, Time after Time, Change of Heart, I Drove All Night, Iko Iko, Hole in My Heart (I think she opened with this), and many others which I either don't necessarily remember the titles or don't really know the titles. I would of loved to hear songs like Sally's Pigeons and Sisters of Avalon to name a few, but I am certainly not disappointed in the show. A Cyndi show has never been a disappointment.

When Cyndi emerged on stage, Rosie joined her as a back up singer for about 4 or 5 songs. In between songs the banter between the two was hysterical. Both were telling stories which where just as good as Rosie's standup routine. They both talked about their first experiences performing as well as getting lost and using GPS. Imagine, both with their heavy New York accents and Cyndi not only having the accent but a slight speech impediment. Listening to them was just as great as the music. When Rosie left the stage, Cyndi really kicked up the show a notch. She rocked. She ventured into the audience numerous times to perform parts of songs, standing up on seats and really emerging herself in the energy she was creating both on stage and with the audience. For the first encore, Rosie came back on stage with Cyndi this time playing the drums. I was very impressed with Rosie's drum skills, she kept up the Cyndi's drummer. Cyndi did 2 or 3 songs for the first encore and the audience was up and moving, dancing, having just as much fun as Cyndi. The second encore, she closed with TRUE COLORS.

This was the third time we had gone to see Cyndi Lauper. She is one hell of a performer, entertainer, musician. Even if your not a huge fan of her music, I can't see anyone not enjoying her concerts. She is playing at Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe on Thursday. We didn't get tickets for that show initially because we were suppose to be in Wisconsin this week. There still are tickets available but considering I have never been to the venue and the seats are toward the back, I think last nights show was enough. It is amazing though, when you see Cyndi once, her show is just so much fun, you feel as if you need a second fixing. I will just need to get over this need and wait until next tour. Anyway, Rosie's skit probably won't change so that would be just a repeat - how funny are jokes the second time in a few days?
