Fairytale Movie Recs
The Predominantly East-European Edition.
1. Tri orísky pro Popelku (1973)
(aka Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel, Three Wishes for Cinderella)
My all-time favourite fairytale movie, a Czech/East German production. I love it so much. Every time I hear the signature piece of music, I get a little starry-eyed.
This is a version of the Cinderella tale that presents our heroine as an occasionally cross-dressing, sharp-shooting, independent woman who makes the prince work for her favours.
Meanwhile the prince spends almost all of his time with his two best (male) friends, frolicking in the forest. In tights.
He first notices our heroine when she's dressed in male clothes, as a hunter.
IT'S AMAZING. WATCH IT.
Okay, after my personal number one the list is in no particular order.
2. Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot (1979)
(Snow-White and Rose-Red)
The girls! The princes! The evil dwarf!
Generally I'd rec any DEFA fairytale. Except maybe for Der Kleine Muck.
3. Princezna se zlatou hvezdou (1959)
(aka Die Prinzessin mit dem Goldenen Stern)
The Princess with the Golden Star. <33333
4. Золотые рога (1972)
(aka Der Hirsch mit dem goldenen Geweih, Baba Yaga, Golden Horns)
A Russian fairytale. I love it a lot, but to someone who's not used to Russian fairytale adaptations they can be a bit bizarre.
5. Финист - Ясный сокол (1975)
(aka Finist, heller Falke; Finest, the brave Falcon (weird English title, idek, hell = bright, not brave))
While we're at it with the Russian fairytales, this one is excellent.
6. Malá morská víla (1976)
(aka Die kleine Meerjungfrau, The Little Mermaid)
This follows the original Andersen version. Meaning: no happy ending here, if I recall correctly (and I believe I do). Fantastic fairytale though.
7. Das singende, klingende Bäumchen (1957)
(aka The Singing, Ringing Tree)
8. Das Feuerzeug (1958)
(aka The Tinder Box)
One of my Dad's favourite Andersen fairytales. :)
9. Sol nad zlato (1983)
(aka Der Salzprinz, The Salt Prince)
10. Sedmero krkavcu (1993)
(aka Die sieben Raben, Seven Ravens)
A girl who saves her seven brothers. I have some mixed feelings about this adaptation, but my Mom loves it to death.
Bonus rec:
Fantaghirò (1991)
All five of them! (At least IMDb tells me there are five, even though I thought there were six? Must investigate.) This is an Italian fairytale movie. Again with the cross-dressing princesses, hahaha. There are some *eyeroll* moments because Fantaghirò's sisters' portrayal is a little problematic, but eh. I STILL LOVE IT. SO MUCH. WOLVES! CROSS-DRESSING! GOOD WITCHES!

Romualdo: Well, neither have I.
