Man, I'm really not having a great morning. I got like no sleep last night, and I just realized I totally forgot to put the recycling out. I realized it when I heard the truck pulling out of my driveway 5 minutes ago. This wouldn't be a big deal except I forgot last time too. And they only collect every other week!
Then I made some coffee. I've been having a horrible time with diverticulosis this spring-- they're actually talking about resecting my bowel. It's been nothing but trouble since last spring, when it was obstructed by that big mass. So I've basically been on either clear liquids or "soft" with almost no coffee. But I really wanted a cup this morning, you know? So I poured the nice dark ethiopian out of my french press and into my cup, which already had the half and half. Then took a drink and almost cried-- the half and half had gone off! Woe!
Anyway meme time!
What I'm reading Wednesday:
What I just finished:
Bog Child, by Siobhan Dowd.
I picked this one up on a rec from someone, it's been sitting in my "to get to" stack for months. It turned out to be much better than I expected. A teenage boy in Norther Ireland at the time of the hunger strikers finds a bog mummy while out stealing peat. The story goes back and forth between iron-age Ireland and the 1980s. It's beautifully written and deals with a lot of complicated issues with grace and without tying everything up too neatly. Really worth a read!
What I'm reading now:
The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific by J. Maarten Troost
Non fiction. Troost and his girlfriend packed up and moved to a remote South Pacific island in the Republic of Kiribati. Things... do not go as planned. I've just started this one, and it's hysterical. I'm going to have to track down his other books!
What I'm reading next:
Probably
The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford. I genuinely enjoyed a biography about her and her sisters, and have heard really good things about this novel.
