Zuko did his best not to flinch as Mai’s cool fingers traced over his scar.
She noticed his discomfiture anyway. She paused, but did not remove her hand. “Does this bother you?”
(her hand, soft, soothing, but it still burns)
“Not really. It’s just feels...strange.”
There was a small smile on her lips. “I guess not a lot of people have tried to touch your scar before.”
(chocolate skin, a gentle, appraising touch and compassion in blue, blue eyes)
“No, not a lot.”
He covered her hand with his, pressing it against the charred skin, and closed his eyes for a moment.
(the only touch he wants to remember)
Even before he opened them again, he could sense her surprise.
His grip on her hand tightened. “Does this...bother you?” He heard the faint challenge in his own voice. He couldn't help it.
(he’s damaged, after all)
He watched as Mai’s eyes narrowed, just slightly.
Her thumb brushed his burnt skin, once, almost defiantly. “I’m pretty sure,” she said, her tone even, “I can live with it.”
He held her gaze for a few moments, as she stared back unwaveringly.
(but she doesn’t care, never did)
He leaned forward to kiss her. Her fingers were still tracing his scar.
(he didn’t need to be healed anyway)
