If you don't have a paid account, you will need to host (upload) the pictures somewhere other than LJ. Free sites would include Flickr and Photobucket, both of which I've found to be easy to use and fairly reliable. I can give you more info on that if that's what you need.
If it's an issue of actually inserting the image, you may want to use a cut tag if it's a big image or multiple images, as this saves loading time for people who are on dial-up (or using the Earlham network, heh). HTML for that (where [] should be replaced with < > because you won't be able to read this if I use the right brackets) is [lj-cut text="click here to see my pictures!"]. If you're on the update LJ page, you should see something near the top right that says "insert," and you can put in the address of your image there and LJ will take care of the rest, or you can do it via html. The tag for that is [img src="http://www.addressofimage.com/image.jpeg"] . If you're still having trouble, IM or email me or something and I'll walk you through it.
