Muse fic and hurricane post

*waves*  I said I'd post to let y'all know that I'm not dead when things settled around here.  Well, things are settled around here, and I'm not dead.

Also, Sogyo no Kotowari showed up with the storm.  So, muse fic.

Zan's favorite room in the mental representation of her new house had shifted to become the living room of the house she'd spent twelve years in as a child.  It was the one with five big windows along one wall looking out on a wide-open yard.  Katrina's fury raged outside.  The salty scent of sea air from just before Ivan drifted in from the hallway.  The whole house was wrapped in the sense of safety she'd felt while surrounded by family and friends during Dennis and a raw awareness of the storms' power that dated back to Andrew and Opal.  In short, Zan had hurricanes on the brain.

In the middle of it all, Zan sat in her favorite chair in front of the windows.  Her feet were tucked up underneath her and she was quietly writing in a notebook that sat in her lap.  Suddenly she smiled and lifted her pen, and just like that, Sogyo no Kotowari was standing behind her.

"Been a while," she said idly, settling back into her chair.  Then, pointing her pen at the nearest window, "You like this?"

"I'm not sure 'like' is the appropriate word," the zanpakutou spirit responded.  "But I am like these storms to you, am I not?  I suppose I'm drawn to your memories of them."

Zan nodded and stretched out her hand towards the glass.  "The worst that sea and sky together can unleash--yeah, that's you."

"Just so long as you remember that I am not a purely destructive force," Sogyo said.

"'Every wave be my shield, every thunder become my blade,'" she recited, letting her hand fall back to her side.  "You're balance.  I remember."

"Yes," he confirmed, and made as if to leave.

"Hey, Sogyo," she called.

The sense of utter stillness behind her indicated that she had his attention.

"I have memories of regular thunderstorms that seemed fiercer at the time than some of the hurricanes I've been through.  Why don't you come out for them?"

"Why?" Sogyo asked, sounding faintly amused.  "Why ask a question that you've already answered?  Should I answer an inferior call?"

Zan smiled.  "You shouldn't," she mused.

Sogyo no Kotowari turned and started to walk away.  "Until next time," he said, just before he disappeared.

"Until next time," Zan acknowledged, and went back to writing.
