When the Sci-fi because Syfy, we knew we were in trouble. Stargate wrapped up its run and then there was silence. None of the big-three were really doing any deep sci-fi. There was a quiet time.
A few years back there was Defiance, which I think was the first real attempt to jump start the genre, but I think Dark Matter was the first time I really thought to myself there was an honest, eager, and complete attempt to bring life back to it.
Dark Matter is a mystery series made by Stargate producers, starring, and guest starring Stargate alum among a wide variety of other talents. It starts out a tiny bit slow for the first two episodes before ramping up. I like the sets and the CG design, I enjoy the evolving character dynamics, and I love the android character. My only regret was that it wasn't longer for the season. It's pretty dark and gritty, but not overly so.
Tonight I watched the first episode of The Expanse. It's very dark and very gritty... People are not well off. Series is set around a pending conflict between Earth, Mars, and those that have colonized the asteroid belt. They pull of some amazing and intense visual effects to show the rigors of living with different gravities and atmospheres. One or two familiar faces in the cast but mostly promising upstarts.
Later this month there's another one, I think its a mini-series called Childhood's End which is one of those alien overlord stories? I watched a trailer, but there wasn't much of a hint about it yet.
