My coworker Ferenc built himself an electric bike. I got to ride it the other day and boy was it fun.

It uses a front hub motor, the batteries are sealed lead acid (SLA) and are located in the gym bag on the back along with the controller. On this bike you need to be going at about a running pace before you can turn on the electric part, but once you turn it on it can easily move you at a fast biking speed without any effort on your part. The batteries are very heavy so you have to be careful when you turn but otherwise it's pretty awesome.

If you too want an electric bike, this one cost about $450 for the parts in addition to the bike. Using lithium ion batteries would make the whole thing lighter as they have 4 times the energy to weight ratio of SLAs, but they are much more exspensive.
