A/N: This fic doesn't really have a point, but I was in the mood to just write and post something short and simple.  I'd thought about writing something for the 100 moods chart.  Maybe something along the lines of 'sleepy' or 'tired', but neither of them were on the chart, so after a bit of thought I decided to write something with that theme anyway since I am also awake when I'd rather be sleeping.

Just Another Sleepless Night

The kick from Ed’s automail foot didn’t have anything to do with Roy not being able to sleep, but after hours of tossing and turning, and having to nudge Ed several times to get him to quit snoring, or to push him back over onto his side of the bed, it was the final straw.

With a frustrated grunt, Roy threw the covers off himself and slid out of bed.  He’d only gone three steps when he stubbed his toe on something hard and metal.  Another nudge proved it to be the buckle on Ed’s belt.  Mentally cursing Ed for carelessly throwing his stuff all over the floor, Roy carefully maneuvered to the bedroom door, knowing that Ed’s boots had been tossed aside in the same manner as the belt and not wanting to chance stepping on them.

Once out of the bedroom, Roy wandered slowly into the living room and turned on the lamp.  He squinted at the brightness for a moment, then looked around the room trying to decide what he was going to do with himself for the next little while.

Books and papers were strewn all over his coffee table and couch from Ed’s research.  Ed’s red coat had been dumped unceremoniously in one of the chairs, and the other chair held Ed’s suitcase-open and with clothes hanging out.

Not wanting to think of how his apartment looked more like a disaster area than a living space, Roy wandered into the kitchen thinking that perhaps a light snack might help him fall asleep.

Ignoring the dirty dishes and the spills on the counter from when Ed had tried to make dinner earlier, Roy opened the fridge and looked inside.  A large pot with a lid dominated the space on the top shelf.  It was stew.  Ed cooked it every time he came back from a long trip and stayed at Roy’s apartment.

He pulled the pot out, grabbed the last clean spoon from the drawer, and took a few bites of it without warming it.  Ed always said that the stew reminded him of his mother; but for Roy, the stew always reminded him of Ed.  It was part of their routine and after a while it had become something that brought a feeling of nostalgia.

As a bachelor, Roy lived alone and enjoyed his personal space.  But then he’d somehow acquired Edward Elric, and Ed demanded that he get Roy’s undivided attention each weekend he returned from a long trip.

The weekends were usually filled with enthusiastic sex, long discussions, Ed’s homemade stew, and, more often than not, sleepless nights for Roy.  And then after the weekend, Ed would leave, taking most of his mess with him, but leaving enough that Roy would spend the next few evenings after work cleaning.

Returning the stew to the fridge, Roy wandered back out of the kitchen and was about to try moving Ed’s research off the couch when Ed stumbled tiredly into the front room.  He peered sleepily at Roy, yawned widely, then put his hand out and stared blearily at Roy, waiting expectantly for his hand to be taken.

Roy gave Ed a wry smile, then turned off the lamp before taking Ed’s hand.  He let his young lover lead him back to the bedroom, around the perilous boots and belt-Ed seemed to know instinctively where they were-and climbed back into bed.

With a tired sigh, Roy got back into bed and settled under the covers.  Yawning, he wrapped his arms around Ed as the teen snuggled in close.  Ed held Roy tightly back in return as if claiming him for his own and gave a contented sigh before almost immediately falling back asleep.

Roy yawned again and closed his eyes, enjoying the feel of Ed in his arms.  As of yet there was no snoring from Ed or tossing in his sleep.  There would be eventually, but for now all was calm and after a few moments Roy began to finally drift off to sleep.
