Geoff Hoon has raised the issue of low turnouts at elections and has suggested that voting should be compulsory.

The statement that "international experience points to compulsory voting being the most effective way to increase turnout"
could be re-worded as "international experience indicates that rounding people up at gunpoint is the most effective way to get people to turn out and drink their free pint of bleach"

If they want to increase turnout, how about giving us some choice. atm we can vote for a bunch of right wing fascists, a bunch or rightwing fascists or a bunch of ineffectual morons!

The suggestion of a small rebate on the council tax is ridiculous. Bribing us with our own money to make them feel loved. I don't think so, they can f*** right off. And when they have given a fiver off everyone’s council tax, how are they going to make up the shortfall? Increase council tax probably.

The big parties would be happy as they would not have to fund large campaigns. The newspapers would do that for them. The real losers are the smaller parties as their supporters tend to be more enthusiastic and would vote anyway.

The following are a discussion on the pros and cons of forcing people to turn up to drink bleach vote
