Weird Al Yankovic Concert -- WOW

Sep 26, 2011 00:23

Remember the old Weird Al? That skinny, nutty, whiter-than-white guy with the mop of curly hair, silly mustache, thick glasses and dorky high voice? He's brilliant -- and I mean, high IQ and so inventive in his song parodies -- but I hadn't really thought of seeing him in concert.

Until recently. I'd seen some of his newer stuff on YouTube, and loved loved loved White & Nerdy. The rap was so well done, the video was hysterical. And to have Donnie Osmond dancing behind you as you emulate Chamillioniare and his posse? Genius! Plus I saw that Weird Al had done some substantial work on himself. He got LASIK so the glasses went away. He did away with the poodle head. And most impressive to me, he worked on his voice. Instead of that high, nasal singing he started out with 30 years ago, he has some real pipes now! There's a Jim Morrison/Doors spoof he does, On Craigslist, and he can really sing deep and soulful! Plus in floppy white shirt and black leather pants, it's a whole 'nother side to Weird Al! Oddly, since he's had work done, he looks younger now at 53 or so than he did 10 years ago. I would never have guessed I'd gauge Weird Al to be hot, but...

So I got excited when my buddy Wanda said she and her husband had tickets to Weird Al, playing at the Austin City Limits theater. The new one, which is RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM MY OFFICE NOW. Man, I rushed home and bought my own ticket! Then Saturday, they drove to my house and I drove us downtown, to my special parking garage. In return, they bought me dinner at Maria Maria's (the Carlos Santana place).

I had a great seat in the new Moody Theater, right dead center, on the mezzanine. He was really great! Lots of the old songs and plenty of new ones. His band is teh awexome. No matter what style or flavor, they sound great. He started out lowkey doing his accordian polka stuff -- it is pretty cute to see Justin Bieber, Brittany Spears, etc., sung all upbeat and polka style. That collection included Lady Gaga, and is called Polka Face. Then he segued into parody after parody. Yeah, the guy must've had 15 costume changes, plus lots of fun animation playing on a 30-foot screen above the stage. Clips from AL TV. Pop culture references about him from many TV shows. New, original animation for some of his newer works.

And he's also wackily flexible. Remember how he could kick his leg up and put his foot behind his head? He can still just stand there playing the accordian and kick higher than his head. Still! Age 53!

His first finale was him on the stage in a fat suit, complete with very realistic looking multiple chins, singing Michael Jackson's Fat. He ended to great applause; we cheered and rumbled the seats, so he came out for an encore in a white jedi suit with a large number of storm troopers and even a mobile R2D2 to do the parody of American Pie.

My my that there Anniken guy
Someday later he'll be Vader
But for now he's small fry
He left his home and kissed his momma goodbye
Saying "now I'm gonna be a Jedi! Now I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Highly recommended!
