Harry Potter at Midnight!

Christi, friend from SlugTribe, got midnight tickets to the new Harry Potter movie on Thurs for me, Kyle, Matthew Bey and Steve Wilson. It made me kinda wiped out at work yesterday (my dayjob is never, ever slow), but I went anyway. Nothing like seeing the movie event of the decade with a lot of hardcore fans! Plus it was at the revamped Gold Crown cinema, 5 minutes away from my house. I didn't get one of the orange lounge chairs, but one of the new white stadium chairs they made at the front. It still was comfy (even had vibration control tied to the movie), we got free sodas and popcorn -- and only paid $5 to the generous game designer guy who rented the whole theater!

It was pretty cool! You've read the books probably, and I won't go in details, but the many sad losses that are dwelt on in the book? Handled very off-screen. Much more emphasis on large chaotic battle scenes, with Harry walking in slo-mo with an anguished look at what he thinks he's caused. The Dumbledore family story dropped. The history of Snape revealed so quickly that Kyle asked me: "So is that saying he's Harry's father??"

That scene 19 years in the future still there, still stupid looking (all the reviewers hate it too) though it's much briefer and was refilmed because the director didn't like the makeup on the kids in the first try.

ADVICE:
Don't wait until the end for an Easter Egg -- there's none.
Don't pay extra (or even pay the same) to see 3D. It's awful for 3D, since it's all gray and gloomy and stuff looks blurry and annoying.

But do see it! Lots of drama and emotion. People in the theater were sobbing... What those kid actors did and grew into in the past 10 years is amazing. Rupert Grint didn't have a big scene in this one, but there was a special Scene for Two that die-hard fans were waiting for, and it didn't disappoint. And it's funny to see, now they're all adult, would you have expected tallness to go (tallest to shortest):
1) Neville Longbottom
2) Ron Weasley
3) Hermione Granger
4) Harry Potter

??
Speaking of which, Matthew Lewis (Neville) got his teeth fixed (though he has prosthetics like his younger self in the movie), turned tall and lean, and
