If there was one thing Eto Hiro could do with confidence, it was read Kitagawa Takayuki like a book. The boy wore his emotions on his sleeve, and he was often overly emotional. So, when Takayuki began teasing Seo Akina, when he began making her life hell. . . Hiro knew the reason why: Takayuki had a crush on Aki.
It started the second week of their first year. Takayuki began by enlisting the females of class 1-A. “Don't be kind to the scholarship student.” he had told them seriously, dangerously. “I don't want her in my school.”
Of course, the girls in their year had gone to work right away. During that first year, the girls of Saint August did everything from spread nasty rumors to dump trash on Aki's head to pushing her down a flight of stairs. Through it all, Takayuki smiled smugly.
For her part, Aki politely smiled at everyone and stayed strong. When they spread nasty rumors, she ignored them. When the girls dumped trash on her head, she changed into her gym outfit. When she was pushed down the stairs, Aki stood and limbed to the nurse's room. Seo Aki never complained and never threatened to get even. She was there to learn, not deal with silly drama.
It wasn't that Aki was alone, she did have an ally or two. Nishioka Ikki, who Takayuki had dubbed as his rival, was always kind to Aki. Hiraizumi Midori, a sweet and soft spoken friend of Kawazu Mina, often tried to warn Aki of Mina's newest schemes. And then there was Aki's strongest ally, Eto Hiro himself.
Hiro spent a good deal of his time trying to get his best friend to see the truth: Takayuki didn't hate Aki, he had a crush on her. Takayuki was acting like a middle schooler, because he had never had a serious relationship before. He was bad with girls, which was why he acted like a love-struck eleven year old around Aki. Truthfully, Hiro was surprised that Takayuki had never pulled Aki's hair before running away.
On the first day of their second year of high school, Hiro brought up Aki. “You know, in the right light Aki-san's really cute.”
Scowling, Takayuki turned on Hiro. “No she's not! She's annoying and poor. Trying to act like a rich girl, when she should know her place.”
Biting his lower lip, Hiro thought about that for a moment. Aki, as far as he could see, never tried to act like a rich girl. No, she was rather serious and studious. “I'd have to disagree, Taka. She's a nice girl, whose interested in her studies. At first, I think she wanted connections to our kind of people. But now, I think she wants to work for her future. You have to admire that, really.”
“I don't have to admire anything that poor people do.” Takayuki replied with a light scoff. “And, if you bring her up again, we're no longer friends, Hiro.”
During the months that came after that conversation, Takayuki continued his campaign against Aki. He started by having Mina and her friends lock Aki in a bathroom stall, before pouring bucks of water over the girl's head. That was followed by several more nasty rumors and several awful incidents involving Aki and different places around the school. Hiro was sure that Aki had been pushed down every flight of stairs at Saint August at least once during her two years at the school.
It was. . . getting to be a bit much.
Thankfully, Ikki was there to protect Aki, much to the annoyance of Takayuki. And, Midori did warn Aki of the impending danger most of the time.
Still, Hiro wasn't sure how much Aki could take.
One warm afternoon, Hiro met up with Ikki on the rooftop of the school. Both boys were supposed to be in gym, but neither had the patience to go to such a class.
“Kawazu Mina's planning on stealing Aki-chan's belongings tomorrow.” Ikki stated with a sigh. “I think she's running out of ideas.”
“Well,” Hiro shrugged. “that tends to happen when you try to ruin someone's life everyday of yours.” Leaning his back against the brick wall, Hiro stared off into the distance. “The first day of our freshmen year, was the day I witnessed it.” Ikki gave Hiro a questioning side-ways glance.. “It was the first time I witnessed someone fall in love.”
Ikki nodded slowly. “How was it?”
“Meh,” Hiro answered with a shrug. “it was alright.”
“Taka-kun likes Aki-chan, but he only knows how to act like a middle schooler when it comes to girls. What do you suspect he'd do if she returned his affections, toss her off the roof of the school?” Ikki laughed softly to himself.
Pausing in thought for a moment, Hiro considered that. Yeah, Takayuki probably would try tossing Aki over a building if she returned his affections or he'd ask her to marry him a moment after the confession. Honestly, it was like Takayuki was a character in a shojo manga.
“Get Hiraizumi Midori to warn Aki-san.” Hiro said after a moment. Digging into his pocket, he took out a bit of money. “And, treat Midori to something to eat after school. She's a nice girl. It can't be easy to go against her friends.”
Taking the money, Ikki nodded in thanks. “Thank you. And, Hiro? See if you can't get that idiot friend of yours to realize his feelings. I'm getting bored with this game of his.”
On the first day of their final year of high school, Hiro pulled Takayuki to the side and whispered: “You're a grown man, now. So, just tell her. Everyone's getting really annoyed and bored with your middle schooler games.”
Takayuki had pushed Hiro away with a, “Shut up! Acting like there's a girl I like, when I don't like anyone.”
“Seo Akina.”
“I hate her!”
The day before summer vacation, Hiro spotted Takayuki watching Aki in the school's cafe. The girl's head was, as always, stuck in a book. At the same table, Ikki and Midori ate lunch and discussed their summer plans. The new transfer, a freshmen from England, Akazome Miki was happily eating her pudding.
Takayuki's eyes were glued to Aki, watching her every moment. In a way, it was almost creepy. But then, maybe all love was a little creepy.
Casually, Hiro leaned over the railing. Together, the two watched Aki from the second story of the cafe.
“She really is very pretty.” Hiro commented, more to himself than to Takayuki.
“Yeah. She's got. . . hair that's. . .shiny.” Takayuki's voice was hardly above a whisper, but Hiro heard him alright.
Smiling to himself, Hiro pressed the issue. “So, after the break why don't you ask her out?”
Takayuki nodded, as if in a trance. “Yeah.”
With a scoff, Hiro shook is head. “Middle schooler.”
