Applying for high school had been like training for war.

Aki had studied for months before the actual entrance exams. She knew she had to get into one of the best high schools in Tokyo if she wanted a good future at a good company. In fact, she had even gone so far as to lock herself in her bedroom every night, wanting to study in private.

Her older brother, Akira, had suggested that she simply go to the high school he had gone to. But, Aki had scoffed at the suggestion. She was not about to enter a high school where only thirty-eight percent of the students went on to university. Aki wanted a future, she wasn't planning on becoming like her Uncle Jin or the other adults around her, thank you very much.

So, on the first day of her high school career, Aki woke up with a triumphant smile on her pretty face. She had carefully put on her school uniform and taken special care not to scuff up her shoes on the way to Saint August.

When entering the school's large cafe, Aki made sure to smile brightly; first impressions were important. The student body of Saint August was made up of children of political figures, artists, actors, business men, doctors, lawyers - the elite. Aki was not about to miss her chance to make a few connections in the posh world she dreamed about nightly.

Now that she was at Saint August, she'd be able to speak to her peers about art, culture, science, history. . . everything that she loved. Her peers would be in the cafe, reading and having passionate arguments about the latest scientific findings.

Only. . .

Only, they weren't.

No, they were gathered around in a huge circle. . . squealing over something or someone.

Utterly confused, Aki turned to the person nearest her. “Um. . . excuse me, what's going on?”

The person, a girl about Aki's age, gave Aki a half-glance and scoffed. “Who are you?” With a roll of her beautiful brown eyes, the girl turned on her heels and walked away.

Aki watched the girl's retreating back for a moment, before turning her attention back to the crowd of students. What in the world were they doing? Quickly, she stood on the tips of her shoes, trying to see above the heads of the much taller students. Still, it was no use. Aki was just too short and there were just too many people.

Suddenly, the crowd parted like the Red Sea and two boys came strolling out. They were tall and looked slightly unkempt, but they were clearly very wealthy and wearing uniforms for first year students.

“Who. . .?”

“You don't know them?” Aki nearly jumped out of her skin. She hadn't noticed that a boy was standing beside her. “The one that looks permittly pissed off is Kitagawa Takayuki, sole heir of the Kitagawa Finical Group. The pretty boy's Eto Hiro, son of the owner's of Fuse Hospital, he's also Kitagawa's best friend.”

“Ah,” Aki nodded slightly. “I see. So, they're already popular?”

The boy shrugged. “Looks like that's the way it'll be. Kitagawa Takayuki-san's comes from the third richest family in Japan. So, everyone will want to make good impressions for that connection.” Giving Aki a confident smile, he added: “You're not one of them, are you?”

“Eh?”

“One of those students who try and get in good with the richer students. It's not them that has money and connections, you know. It's their parents.”

Again, Aki nodded. “I see.” With her eyes, she followed Takayuki and Hiro as they moved to the second level of the cafe. “Hey,” turning her full attention back to the boy, Aki gave him the once over. “what's your name?”

With a little bow, the boy introudced himself with, “I'm Nishioka Ikki. You're the one everyone's talking about, aren't you? The girl on the scholarships. . . uh, Seo Akina. Seo-san,” he reached out for her hand and shook it happily. “welcome to Saint August Academy.”

Pulling her hand away from Ikki's, Aki smiled politely. “Thank you. Are you a first year, Nishioka-san?”

“Yup. Though, I don't look like a first year. I'm dreadfully good-looking, you see.” Again, he smiled happily. “My looks make me seem older, more mature. At least that's what my mother tells me.” Ikki paused in thought for a moment, apparently thinking over a very important matter. “Hey, Aki-chan. . . let's be friends, okay?” His eyes were staring off past Aki as he spoke.

Aki glanced behind her to see the girl from earlier staring at them. No, she wasn't staring, she was shooting daggers at them with her beautiful eyes. “Um, is she a friend of yours?” Aki questioned, before turning back around to face Ikki.

Only, Ikki wasn't there. Aki could only make out a glimpse of his perfect hair, as he moved through the crowd of students.

Well. . .

“Excuse me, poor person.” Eyebrows knitted in confusion, Aki turned around again and found herself face to face with that girl again. “My name is Kawazu Mina. Yes, as in The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Kawazu. He's my father.”

“Congratulations to your father.” Aki replied shortly. “However, I don't see what your father's job has to do with me or even me liking or respecting you.”

Mina appeared dazed for only a moment, before recovering her calm meanness. “Well, it has everything to do with it, whatever your name is. That boy you were just talking to?”

Aki smiled. “Ikki-kun? He's decided we're friends. He seems very nice.”

“Yes. Yes, well. . .his father's the film director Nishioka Koushun.” Mina leaned in close, almost as if she wanted to tell Aki a secret. Then, in a loud stage whisper she stated coldly, “That makes him better than you. I hear you're only here because of a scholarship. That means you don't really deserve to be here, Aki-chan. ”

Sucking in a deep breath and trying her damnest not to slap Mina across the face, Aki smiled her brightest and poliest smile. “Mm, maybe. But, I'm here. So. . . please show me your best regards.” Mina's mouth opened a little, before closing again. “And, Mina-chan. . . if you can't be polite toward me for the next three years, please ignore me. I'm sure you're good at ignoring people whom you think are less than you. Honestly, we really don't mind.”

Taking a deep breath, and not believing what she had just done, Aki turned on her heels and made her way through the crowd of students.

Oh God, what had she just done? Her high school career had ended before it had had a chance to begin. She was completely finished. Wait. . . had Mina said Ikki was the son of film director? And, wasn't Mina's father. . .

“Fuck.”

From above, Kitagawa Takayuki watched Aki walked away from Kawazu Mina, a look of disgust and interest on his handsome face.

Seo Akina.

Now, she was someone to pay attention to. It appeared that Takayuki's high school career wouldn't be as boring as he thought it would be.
