I just finished "I Shall Wear Midnight" and I'm feeling a little teary-eyed here.

The whole book feels very... final.

I'm sure some of it is me projecting and counting fingers on how many more Discworld books we might expect, and some of it is Pterry himself wondering how many more books he may be able to write, but "I Shall Wear Midnight" feels like not only the last Tiffany Aching book, but the last Witches book as well.

I mean, he went back and tied Esk properly into the Witches mythos and circle (Esk removed the knob from the end of her staff! And now it works better for her! This tiny little fact, I am sure, would have Nanny Ogg laughing for days if she knew). That's only the second biggest niggle of the series, the biggest, of course, being Vetinari's personality change.

One of the biggest "oh, so this is where people like me live" moments of Aussiecon 4 was how everyone wandering about had at least one book in their hands or their bag, but at least a third of the books visible were copies of "I Shall Wear Midnight", which had only just been released. If someone had their nose stuck in a book, it was almost always "I Shall Wear Midnight". When was the last time you were in a public place and people around you were all reading the same book? That wasn't a book release or a signing?

In totally unrelated book news, I've just started reading S.M. Stirling's Change novels. Which are fun, if a little too self aware for my taste, but I still like 1632 better. Possibly because I'm a masochist and have lost any sense of self-preservation when it comes to David Weber's writing from continued exposure.

I think I'm going to sit here a little longer, cuddling "I Shall Wear Midnight". *wipes tears away*
