What now?

Ok guys. This is 'just for fun' for a contest  on  brigits flame .  I missed the sign ups by a cunt hair.

Read it if you like :D

The theme is unity.

I'm super paranoid about grammar and flow... and it making sense ... but I figure I can't get any better if I don't practice.

"Hello?"

Mikaela tapped on the door. It eased open. The white room would have been empty were it not for a chair sitting in the middle of the room and a security camera perched in the corner. Mikaela focused her attention on the camera and said,

"Uhhh... I think I’m supposed meet... ahh well I’m not sure, but I’m supposed to be here." The thought made her smile and she realized, yes, she was supposed to be here. Weird. This felt more right than anything had lately. She wasn’t afraid. She heard the door click closed behind her and quickly spun around to find an incredibly handsome, yet familiar face staring back at her. The door she came from was gone.

"Hi Mikaela." He said quietly, " I can tell that you’re confused."

Her eyes narrowed and she studied him more closely. Where did she know him from? It was strange that he seemed to know her so intimately... and she him. The strong line of his jaw. His beautiful blue eyes. Those warm, wide hands. Her instinct was to run and hug him and lose herself in his arms... but she had no idea why. She couldn’t let on her apparent love for a man she couldn’t even name so she said,

"Who the fuck are you?" His lips curled into a sly smile. He paused, spread his hands and said,  "You haven’t changed a bit have you? Think Mika. I know you remember some of me."

She lied.

"Nope. Never seen you before."

"Well, it will come to you in time." He stepped closer to her, " My name is Colin and I’m here to tell you about a journey you must take. Things are about to change drastically and you play a very important role in the out come."

Mikaela laughed.

"Ok, before with the white room and all I thought I was dreaming but now with this ‘Quest’ crap I know I am... so continue. I haven’t had a good dream in a while." She folded her arms across her chest and leaned back on her heels.

"Humanity has taken a turn for the worst. All the hatred, and selfishness has collected and formed it’s own... army if you will. This army is attacking all that is good in this world and converting it’s power to destructive forces."

"Right," said Mikaela "... let me guess, I’m the only one who can stop it?"

"No you’re not." He reached out to hold her hand. " But you’re the only one who will." His eyes never left hers and he moved closer. They were nearly touching. A shiver went down her spine.

"And why might I do that?"Never one to back down, and because he was hot, she stepped closer so they were touching.

"Because you love me." and he bent down a kissed her. The shiver in her spine reverberated through her and into him untill both their souls were buzzing into one. His hands felt so good holding her and he smelled so familiar, so lovely. She wanted nothing more than to stay there forever embracing her other half. She was whole.

Then the phone rang.

Still heavy with sleep it took her a moment to remember where she was.

"Goddamn it!!!" She shouted as she picked up the phone.

"Hello!?" It was her mother. "Mom, you just woke me up from the best dream I ever had."

A few days later...

Colin was right about what he told her. Who he actually was, and how she knew him was still a mystery to Mikaela, but he was right, so a big part of her trusted him. A few days after that dream the sky began to take on a pinkish hue. The weather man attributed it to, "A strange phenomenon where the atmosphere is rich in compounds which preferentially absorb blue light." Mikaela didn’t buy that because it seemed to be making people hostile and withdrawn. With each passing day the sky turned a darker shade of red and people began to lose their humanity. They were like animals with the ability to hate. Hostiles.

People stopped showing up at work and the world slowed to a stop. Some were unaffected and Mikaela was one of them. Tired of just waiting around for something to happen, Mikaela ventured outside to see if she could find herself some weapons. The hostiles would attack anything that moved and were extremely territorial. If you stepped to close to their domain they would rip you to shreds. You had to be careful about these hostiles. They retained their intelligence after the change and could fool you into trying to help them while they made you their next meal.

Early one morning Mikaela was returning from getting supplies when she spotted a hostile mangled, and bloody, crawling along the ground towards her house. She shouldered her gun and kept it aimed directly for his head. Approaching slowly she thought of shooting him because looked strong and she had to get past him to get back into her house. The hostile must have heard her because he flipped his head around and stared directly into her eyes. Her knees went weak.

"Colin?!" He smiled. She dropped the gun and ran to him. He had deep gashes in the flesh on his face was covered in blood. One leg looked broken and it jutted out at an unnatural angle.

"Mika.." he coughed. "I thought I’d stop by to see how you were doing?"

"Oh my God Colin... What is happening? What happened to you? You were right! You were right all along! Something fucking wrong is going on and I’m scared. I’ve been thinking about what you said in the dream but I can’t figure out what I’m supposed to do." Tears began to collect in her eyes. She attempted to brush some dirt out of his cuts. He winced.

"Are you alright? Here let me help you up. It’s not far to my door. I could carry you and get you inside safely."

"No I think here is fine. I just wanted to see you before I left."

"What do you mean? These open wounds are pretty deep and you’re bleeding badly. We have to get you some help. There may still be some gas in my car..." he raised a crimson hand to shush her and stared straight into her eyes.

"I’ll see you again." He kissed her fingers. "You’ve got a lot of work to do. I was coming to tell you I can’t help you. No one can." She turned her head away from him while she wiped her tears. It was horrible to see him like this. It was like a part of her was dying.

"Mikaela look at me. This is very important. You know that old saying, ‘Everything happens for a reason?’"

"Yes" she sobbed.

"Well it’s true. So, this needs to happen. I need to die and I need you to provide me with an exit. That’s why you brought your gun." He pointed to it.

"What?!? You’re crazy. I brought my gun for protection against the Hostiles I’m not going to kill you! I’m not even sure who you are but I feel this profound connection to you. I could never take your life. It feels like I’d be slaughtering part of myself."

"You’re instinct is right Mika you would be. But it needs to happen this way. Besides," he wheezed, "if you don’t do it soon the hostiles will be here and they’ll have both of us." Mikaela looked around for any sign of them and shook her head.

"No... I’ll just get you into the house and..."

"I’M DEAD WEIGHT MIKA!" He shouted and looked to the hills. "I’d only weigh you down. Don’t worry my sweet, sweet girl. It has to be this way. I’m so sorry. I’ll always be with you. Please Mika. I’m in so much pain. It took every last ounce of me to get away from them but I’m sure they can follow a blood trail." He motioned for the hills and Mika saw them running in the distance.

"They’re coming baby. I need you to do it now. Please. I love you."

"But its not fair..." she whispered and put her lips to his butchered forehead. There was that shiver again. She reveled in it a while before standing and grabbing her gun. Her hands were quivering and for a moment, she worried she couldn’t pull the trigger. The hostiles were coming up fast so time was short.

"I better see you again or you’re going to be in big trouble." How could she manage this? She'd never felt so alive before and now she had to end the man that sparked that life. She couldn't look but if she didn't, she might miss and have to fire twice. That would be agony. Teary eyed she found his head with her scope. Colin forced a smile and closed his eyes.

"I love you" Mikaela whispered as she pulled the trigger. When the bullet met his skull with a sickening thud. A huge flash of light that groaned and rolled out as far as she could see. The wind from the blast shook her body and her hair flew back from her face. The hostiles were incinerated where they stood. She knelt down next to what was left of Colin’s body began to pray.

"I promise I won’t let you down baby." then she wiped the tears from her face and looked to the red stained horizon.

Two words escaped from her lips.

"I’m ready"
