Got anything to say about how I play this bumbling detective? Feel free to drop a note here! All I ask is for you to be gentle, since I'm not very confident with him. ♥
CHARACTER INFORMATION
Canon Character: Dick Gumshoe / Itonokogiri Keisuke [糸鋸圭介]
Series: Ace Attorney Series
In-Game Name: Lieutenant Dick Gumshoe
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Ship: The Amestris
Position: Gunner
Appearance: Its easy enough to say that Gumshoe was perhaps born (...or at the very least, made to look so very suitable) for his job from the very beginning. A man of big stature, Gumshoe's a man who can easily impose quite an impression on people at first sight - especially when you add his ruggedishly rough looks (complete with stubble-things) that basically just screams 'grunt man' to anyone (which while he is kinda sorta is technically, is also not really like that at all).
Due to his less than desirable income, the man is usually seen in a simple attire of pants, shirt (with a plain tie loosely worn around his notably frayed collar) and a (rather musty-smelling) coat over it all - all the clothing either handmade (pretty impossible-looking for a man like him, but its... been done before) or second-hand. Despite his somewhat plump look he is actually quite muscular, and is pretty strong from his training back when he was still in school. He also makes it a habit to try and keep reasonably in shape, though his tendency to play grunt man and messenger boy helps a lot in that area too.
More than his second-hand attire or rugged looks, what really catches people is his rather expressive face. Gumshoe has a tendency to let emotions play quite obviously across his face, making him an easy man to read. Not that many actually do that to him, since most of the time the man just ends up contradicting himself and getting caught in his own words that he had said earlier (but forgot).
Personality: Despite his somewhat intimidating and gruff looks at first sight, Gumshoe is a man who has a heart of gold and may possibly be one of the most honest kind of guys you can meet in this day and age. He's always very willing to help those in need even though he's pretty needy himself and may possibly get into trouble if and when he helps them. Still, he takes his job very seriously and works hard with it with the greatest pride and pleasure than he can bring himself up with to do it. Though of course, at times his overzealousness can get the better of him, but it's usually nothing some fixing up can't fix (and maybe a paycut if he gets unlucky enough).
Simple-minded by nature, Gumshoe has a tendency to be distracted easily when it concerns him, and he's easily fooled by many just by talking around him in circles - or beating around the bush, whatever floats your boat. He's a bit muddleheaded, easily amused and also tends to forget things very easily, or at least has a great tendency to misremember things and takes takes at a literal face value more often than not. There's also that habit of his where he talks before he thinks what he should say, and that habit has gotten him into trouble more than once already. With all of this, one can easily say that he's most certainly the kind to follow, and not to lead - which is most certainly true, and if anything Gumshoe's only all too glad to follow the people he admires and respects. He's just that kind of guy who has his heart right where it is and does things to his fullest ability - usually to disastrous results, but it's the thought that counts, right?
All those aside though, it's safe to say that Gumshoe is a guy that people can definitely depend on without worry - he's steadfastly loyal to the superiors he respects as well as his friends who he cherishes a lot. For them, he'll do just about anything (be it getting the next meal for them to braving hell and high water just for them), especially when they're down or when they're in trouble. You don't even need to think twice about the worry of Gumshoe betraying you - he most certainly won't, unless circumstances force him to be trapped between a rock and a hard place. Then that's another thing altogether.
Abilities/Weapons: Despite his bumbling personality and a tendency to mess up, Gumshoe is actually surprisingly adept with electronics and gadgetry; he's able to understand the know-how and uses of stuff that others might take a longer time to actually fully comprehend it, which helps a lot in his work and may be the main reason why he hasn't found himself staying to pay as his salary yet. Like every other military officer, Gumshoe's also trained in the art of hand combat for the purpose of self-defence (though he doesn't use it often) and is also licensed to carry around a standard-issue military gun, which the man has. He would have wanted to get his own special gun, but his salary prevented him from making that dream come true. Not that he actually dares to use it much, but well. A nice looking gun would be awesome nonetheless.
How well can your character hack?: Being fairly competent with mechanics (even though he doesn't seem to look like it) and thus the journals as well, Gumshoe is able to hack up to Medium level due to the (somewhat secret) work he does for Edgeworth from time to time. Anything more than that is out of reach to him.
Weaknesses: Due to his simple-mindedness, Gumshoe's easily fooled by even most simplest of tricks more often than not, despite his most valiant efforts of trying not to be fooled by it. He's a bit of a clumsy guy too, so he messes up quite a bit even though he really tries his best not to - and his attempts at making things better also end up to make things worse, much to his dismay. His memory is absolutely terrible, and he can be a little slow in the had when he can't really understand things that leave his grasp (which is quite a lot, really). His tendency to let things slip at times also has landed him into trouble a fair number of times already.
Another thing about him is that when forced to choose between duty and friends, Gumshoe will choose duty first (unless there are extreme circumstances that turn his decision around otherwise, but those cases are very very hard to come by), because that's where his heart is. Those choices, of course, will not sit well with most people, and because of that Gumshoe usually can find himself having strained relationships with the people he considers his friends. Because of this, he usually finds himself working alone. His loyalty of course, can also be considered a liability, since it may hinder his own ability if it conflicts with the interest of the ones he's put his loyalty into.
While he may be big and gruff, Gumshoe is by no means a combat expert - he may be able to use his big stature and strength against less experienced opponents, but when faced with someone well-versed enough he'll find himself sorely beaten quite easily. He has been training to make up for this though, so perhaps that may change one of these days. But however well-trained he may be, between fight or flight Gumshoe will always pick the latter when he can - fighting is something he doesn't particularly enjoy, and though he does understand the reason why, it still doesn't stop him from trying not to hurt people when he can; his nature just doesn't allow him to.
History: The Gumshoe family line has always been in the line of Ivona's police force ever since anyone could remember, but from young Dick Gumshoe always had bigger dreams and even bigger ideals. It could be the fact that he was the sixth child in his line of seven, the fourth (and youngest) son in the family and could never truly stick out and make his own way in life. Being the youngest boy in the house, Dick was always bullied around by his six other brothers and sisters, but being a gentle person by heart he had never gotten mad at them and simply sucked it all up. His kind disposition always won the hearts of the adults though, and in no time at all Dick managed to get a better life in the family as his siblings had to start treating him well lest they wanted to get punished for bullying him. This favouritism, of course, was not left without its fair share of hatred and jealously, of which Dick did get for the longest time before the Gumshoe siblings got their priorities right when they left their childhood and became teenagers.
One of the family's biggest problems had always been the money - the Gumshoes weren't exactly nobles, and with so many children they certainly could afford expanses for all of them to attend school. Knowing this, Dick volunteered himself to opt out of school (for nothing but purely good reasons, and not because he didn't want to study) and instead worked with his parents (both of them simple food vendors, since they had retired from the force by then) to help bring in that extra dough for the family and his siblings. But even then, studying was something Dick always strove for - whenever he was free from his obligations, he would be found with his eldest brother, trying to learn from what his sibling learnt in school. It wasn't exactly the picture perfect idea of pursuing his studies, but it was one that Dick found that he didn't mind so much.
It was nearly only all the way up to he was around twenty - when all of his other siblings were pretty much done with school - then did Dick finally get a chance to study. With help and support from his family and siblings, he tried to land himself a place into one of Bellcius's finest military academies in order to pursue his lifelong dream of being a military officer. The life of being one had always been something that enamoured and attracted him, so when he discovered that yes, he did get a spot in the Belarus Military Academy, words couldn't describe just how happy he was. It was one of the greatest moments of his life, pal, oh yes it was.
Still, that was only just the beginning. Belarus was a good struggle for Gumshoe, given the fact that he had close to zero academic history and was constantly surrounded by all the nobles and military families who looked down on him due to his status. But Gumshoe preserved, and his kind demeanour eventually won the hearts of kind students and even kinder teachers, and they helped him a whole ton as Gumshoe lumbered through his studies. He was never really that wonderful or excellent, but his hard work and dedication eventually paid off, and while he took a good long while (five whole years, and the academy almost wanted to kick him out altogether), he did manage to pass the exams and finally found himself living his dream of being a military officer at the age of twenty-five.
Unfortunately for Gumshoe though, he didn't exactly get an immediate position in the military, but he was still helping out anyway wherever he could (even though at times to disastrous results, which resulted in his first paycut just two days down the road with one particularly annoyed officer). It was about a week later when Gumshoe had his first... 'official assignment', one could say, given to him by one of the military's finest men mainly because there was nobody else available at the time. It had been a case where a Vohemaro diplomat who had came to Ivona was shot dead, and the suspect had instead accused one of the military officers taking charge of the case to be the one who had instigated him to do it. Because of this turn of events, the investigation had been suspended and with two apparently doing their discussion within one of the lobbies in the place, Gumshoe was ordered to defend the place's sole entrance - and it was an order Gumshoe did with pride.
That pride didn't exactly help though when instead both official and suspect were suddenly found dead after the loud bang of a gunshot, and with Gumshoe's lack of alibi in the timeframe he was declared as the prime suspect and arrested on the spot. Just when all seemed lost, hope came to him in the form of a certain frilly individual - a young and fresh officer from Belarus too: a certain man by the name of Miles Edgeworth. Edgeworth had conducted his own investigations on the matter, and not only did he clear him of all charges, he also found the real killer - though to some rather bad results. The killer had fled instead, firing a gun at them to get away and despite trying to chase the person down, the killer had instead fled.
Touched and moved by the effort Edgeworth had put into clearing his name despite how he had treated the younger man earlier, Gumshoe decided to put his heart into helping out the man and decided to follow him wherever he went. To that extent, Gumshoe managed to get himself assigned to the flagship of the nation - the Victoria II - despite protests and Edgeworth's own chagrin. The next few years after that was spent upon the ship, going through life in his usual ways as he happily served the man he admired and respected while trying not to get his pay cut so terribly or get booted out of the ship. It was strange, often dangerous life as it wont to be when he was an officer, but Gumshoe managed somehow for those few years. However, he did blunder quite a bit on one certain incident, which resulted in his transfer from the ship and all the way to an outpost in Tulgim, where he did nothing but patrol the area in the tiny ship they had and putting down the occasional snatch thief.
Suffice to say, life for the next two or so years there was quite a monotonous tune, but still Gumshoe did his best to make the most out of it, doing whatever he could for himself and his workers to make things all the better. He occasionally talked with Edgeworth when he could, but otherwise life was at it is - that was until the whole scandal with Edgeworth happened. Being stuck all the way at Tulgim, Gumshoe couldn't do anything but watch as the drama unfolded in the news - from the accusation to the investigation and finally the truth, where what was reported shocked even him. All Gumshoe could think of there and then was just how Edgeworth would cope with all of this...
...and he got his answer just around a month later, when Gumshoe got a message from none other than Edgeworth himself right when news of his 'death' broke out all over Ivona. It was something of a heartfelt reunion for the man ("Sir! I thought you were dead!") but Edgeworth pushed aside all of that and got to his point: with the fact that he had left the military, he trusted Gumshoe with the mission of watching out what happened while he was gone. Being the loyal man that he was, Gumshoe took up this mission willingly and started to think of how he could do that while stuck in Tulgim like this. It was a topic that bothered him for the next couple of weeks - and ironically, it was because of this that Gumshoe managed to get his ticket out of this place. Well, once he got one hell of a paycut from having crashed the ship against the mountainside.
Because of that incident, the government decided that it would be in their best interest to have this man much further away from them to prevent anymore ship crashings, and to that effect sent the man towards the fine Amestris where reunions and new meetings await the man upon the ship. Hopefully without anymore paycuts, because pal, eating instant noodles daily gets quite tiring after a while.
