My two cents... heh hehlimegreen_slothSeptember 1 2003, 09:14:06 UTC
In terms of a stand-alone movie, I don't think LotR is at all overrated; indeed it is quite an achievement. But in terms of doing justice to the books, yes it is overrated but it was always going to be. The depth of the world created simply cannot be recaptured by a movie that - although a huge one - does have a budget and that also needs to be appealing and even understandable to a mass audience. For this reason we find some simple, typical plot lines *cough*Arwen*cough* enhanced, while other deeper ones that take more explaining are glossed over and simplified or ignored completely. That said, most readers of the book were aware of this of the beginning and are fairly forgiving of PJ, just because he finally brought their beloved tale to life. It is a tragedy that some simply cannot be included, but most of us are happy to take what we can get. However, for some of us there are some changes that are close to unforgivable, especially in The Two Towers. I’m not going to go into them except to say MASSIVE PLOT DEVIATION! CHARACTER
