a month or so ago, nlvb came to a medieval event at berkely castle with me. On the street leading into town there were lots of gorgeous buildings - many were old shops converted into houses to that the original shopfronts were preseverved. the place had real charm without being touristy, and i think most of the street was listed.
normally when i go tresspassing, nlvb tags along in a neurotic "Omg, what are you doing woman, you;re going to get me arrested again, aren't you" sort of way. but this time I persuaded him to take pics - mainly cos i reasoned that they must have left the gate in order to let people look around, and he is a property developer after all...
there were several other coaching inns on the street, but this was the only one that was in a bad way. Later that night we got talking to my friends who organised the event and they were saying the place has been on the market for a few years, and they'd been lusting after it too. AParently it went to auction earlier this year but failed to make its reserve, so now its reduced to something silly like 3/4 million, which sounds like a bargain to me, cept you;d need to spend as much again to bring it up to spec. our friends were saying they'd toyed with idea of buying it between several people.
the gate they conveniently left open
this was the only room we could get a clear view into, I think someone had been using it as a gym or dance studio
we both loved this curved bay, but it needs heavy restoration
the place seems to hvae been a kind of mini shopping arcade in a former life, it would make great studios.
it has about enough room for a beer garden at the back, but nlvb ruled it off his lust list cos there wasn;t enough room for all his palm trees (I know, what kind of lunatic grows palms in the uk? if he wasn;t the most pessimistic person i;ve ever met i;d put it down to optimism, as it is I just put it down to insanity and nerdiness)
and this was a doorway I particualry liked a few doors down - it shows how nice this palce could be.
