Tibetans all over the world are refusing to celebrate New Year, which fell on 25 February this year. In Tibet, people have been arrested by the thousands over the last month, and interrogated. The two questions are as follows:
1. Do you like the Dalai Lama?
2. Are you going to celebrate New Year?
People who answered yes to 1 and no to 2 were beaten and charged with being unpatriotic (resulting in prsion sentences, criminal records, fines, etc). Those who answered no to 1 and yes to 2 were given 600 Chinese yuan.
I will mention 2 causes of the refusal to celebrate:
1. 50 years ago, China occupied Tibet. Since then, millions have been killed and hundreds of thousands have fled to other countries.
2. One year ago, in the city of Lhasa alone, hundreds of people were killed and thousands were "disappeared." I think the number is about 7000 people, who are just missing. The number of people still being held after being arrested last March is 1362, according to the Chinese government itself.
Tatiana and I stood in front of the Chinese Embassy in Luxembourg for about an hour on 25 February, saying nothing, holding candles. Twice the police came and asked us what we were doing. They told us that the Chinese Embassy wanted to know if we were holding a demonstration. There were two of us. All we held was candles. We said nothing. Is that a demonstration?
