Piet Mondrian - THAT's the "French artist" with the stark, simple paintings I was looking for. (He's French by choice; Dutch by birth.)
Not Pierre Monteaux the conductor, and certainly not Vasarely and the Op-Art movement. I was mistaken by some misleading info. I actually have next to no interest in Op-Art. The term I was looking for would be "Neo-Plasticism," or, in a broader way, "De Stijl."
