I think I made a friend this afternoon.

So after work I went to the Dandy store to get milk (it's 50c cheaper there than at Mid Brighton!) and a few other things.

So I am walking down the Medicinal Aisle (stoopid pimple!) and as I was about to get to the end I noticed this old guy looking suspicious. He was really close to the stockings section (too close to be browsing, more like he was looking at something specific) and in a corner part (where shelves started). I watched him for a bit and noticed he was doing something with his hands and every time I walked past him (back and forwards) he would turn away from me.

At one stage he looked at me and I just said something about stealing. He looked like he was confused and I just said "I am just wondering what you are stealing?". He didn't answer but smiled.. I stayed and watched him. He then went to the end of the aisle where his wife was looking at blankets and I noticed he had panadol in his hand (be was holding them under a box of tissues so it wasn't obvious he had them). I stuck around watching them. They started walking towards the deli (and past the milk section). I stopped to get milk and by the time I got to the deli he wasn't holding anything but I saw his wife a short way away holding the blanket she chose and a box of tissues, but no panadol.

I went up to the guy and asked where they were. He didn't answer me and I said that if he doesn't pay for them he would be stealing. He said his wife was sick and she needed one and then pulled the box out of his pocket!! I said that he still had to pay for it even if she was sick. At this stage another male customer came over and told me to stick to my guns because he had spotted this guy stealing previously. I wasn't being quiet about my concerns so other shoppers heard it all (and this was a busy time).

The thief kept saying his wife was sick and that is what they wanted, and I told him that is fine but he doesn't need to steal them by putting them in his pocket. At this stage the Deli staff called the Manager.. the Mgr hadn't come by the time the thief was on the move so I followed them to the checkouts. Got to the checkouts and I went to the service desk while the thief went to the register next to it. At this stage, a guy on express said he had to go to see what the Deli wanted. I asked if he was the Mgr and he said yes so I told him what was going on. The thief told us that his wife was sick (but we noticed he had just eaten some of the panadol). We both stood there watching the thief etc and discussing other thefts we had seen/heard of etc. Since I was still wearing my work shit (though had my jacket over it) it was obvious I was an employee.

The guy got to the front of the checkout and we saw the blanket go through, then his Ricotta, then the tissues. We both watched as the panadols were going through but then noticed that the thief had ripped off the barcode (nothing else, not the end of the packet, but the barcode!). As I said to Bill (Mgr), if you were going to have some, why would you rip off the barcode? Bill asked the checker which packet the guy got (12 pack) and so Bill went to get a replacement to scan (though there is the option to search for it on the registers :). When he came back, he scanned it and then came to me. It was then that Bill told me that if you try and screw with him you pay for it. He had grabbed a 24 pack Panadol and charged the thief that. So he paid double what he should have all because he was going to steal it. And as I mentioned to Bill, he would be too embarrassed to come back for a refund because of it all..

After I finished my shop I went through the checkouts and Bill again thanked me for the help etc. I liked the way he thought.. I'm sick of people stealing stuff like that. It costs everyone in the long run. And I wasn't afraid to make it known what was going on. Luckily though I didn't have my name badge on :)

Ok, I'm done. Chikkin's ready.
