Okay so I don't agree with the state of Kansas and the whole teaching "intelligent design", stuff that is being said about it from both sides is fairly silly. A bit from a
MSNBC article said
In an effort to fight back against intelligent-design advocates, a
grass-roots group calling itself Campaign to Defend the Constitution
said Tuesday that it was launching a $200,000 online ad campaign "to
combat a threat posed by the religious right to American democracy."
What is that? "a threat posed by the religious right to American democracy" What are they thinking this ruling is going to do? Spark a revolution leading to the establishment of a theocracy? Please! Give me a break. Its a ruling about evolution and intelligent design not the fundamentals of democracy, its not this huge separation of church and state issue, or at least it shouldn't be. ID argues that the complexities of life, ie things like the eye and such, things that the whole is greater then the sum of the parts, are too complicated to evolve without some external force, possibly a deity or even some underlying physical law of which we are not yet aware that leads toward greater complexity. True ID does not promote any particular deity, hell the way it can be read even leaves room for alien influence, (that episode of ST:TNG where the Federation, Klingons and Cardasians all discover they came from some progenitor race being a good example) It is a questioning of evolution, nothing more, and taken the right way can even have a positive effect on science as a whole. Science is all about questioning what we know and wondering how things work. Take physics for example, at the turn of the 19th century physicist thought they had it all figured out, that all there was left was to file of some rough corners on a couple of theories and bang-o they were good. Then along came Mr Eniestien with his E=mc^2 and tossed the whole thing on its head. There has to be room to question, not questioning dogma can be as bad for science as it can be for religion. So the whole ID thing, get over it, don't blow it all out of proportion. Yes there is probably a group of people who are trying to smuggle "religion" in the disguise of ID but crap like that happens a lot and people don't get nearly that upset. Its bias, we all have it for something and another, get over it and move on. Making outrageous statements like "a threat posed by the religious right to American democracy" it just annoying and does nothing besides add fuel to the Us vs Them mentality, waste of time and harmful to everyone involved.
Oh and for the record, I have no problems with evolution, I have had all my questions about it answered to my satisfaction, and thus baring any other developments, is the process that best explains the natural world we see around us.
