Sunday night I went to see Hiphoplogía, a Chilean rap group, at Casa de las Estrellas. Turns out Hiphoplogía doesn't exist anymore; now they're called Red Hip Hop Activista (Hip Hop Activist Network). They do community organizing and popular education, using rap as a distribution vehicle. Their organizing seemed a bit hierarchical, even Marxist, for my tastes, but their rapping was excellent.
Casa de las Estrellas is a great place. It used to be a synagogue, but was abandoned, probably because the Jewish community here is pretty well off, and lots of well-off people got out of here after the 2001 economic crisis. It's been turned into a gym and social center by a bunch of cool activists. Five days a week there are a variety of classes, all for a donation. On the weekends they host free or cheap events and usually offer vegan food. Why am I working in Tucuy Paj and not there? Good question.
