This is truly the most important night in American history. On November 4, 2008, the 44th president of the United States was elected-- an African American. A black man, son of a Kenyan father and an American mother. Tonight, hundreds of years of barriers were destroyed. Tonight it has been proven that despite background, despite ethnicity, despite race, it is possible to achieve your dreams. It has been proven that, against all odds, skill, capability, intelligence, and determination mean more than race, more than skin color.
I am proud-- proud of my country, of my fellow classmates, of my fellow citizens. I am proud that young people turned out in droves to vote, I am proud that my grandmother and great grandmother who have grown up with racism, grown up in the depression, grown up during the rise of the middle class, grown up during the fight against socialism and communism, cast their vote for Barack Obama because he is what this country needs. He is who will bring us from war, he is who will raise the standard of living, he is who will make this country a place to be proud of, a place to be respected internationally, a place where people can come to to achieve prosperity and greatness. Barack Obama will repair the damage of the past eight years. Barack Obama will restore this country.
A government of the people, by the people, and for the people is here. Change is here. Barack Obama is here. Yes, we can, America. Yes, we can.
"The true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth but from the enduring power of our ideals-- democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope. That's the true genious of America." -- Barack Obama, 11/4/2008
